It's not a problem if you're using a major highway. The whole cross-country drive in a Tesla thing has been done and dusted a few times already. Of course, lines at the charging stations, then waiting to charge, adds a lot of extra time to the trip.

I'd be up for an EV as a second car for around town if they could figure out a way (reason!) to put in a manual transmission. ;)

I never said it couldn't be done. But, it would take 2-3 days as opposed to 22 hours. I only get so many vacation days. I don't really want to spend an extra day waiting for my vehicle to charge.

Besides, I have no interest in owning a Tesla.

Curious why you'd want that? There's no real need for a transmission in an EV, especially as a runabout appliance. Offroad might be a different story re: gear reduction, you'd have to read up on what Rivian is doing.

What's more interesting is brakeless EVs. Yeah, no brakes. Don't ask me, I haven't done any research on that, other than I know from driving cars with regenerative brakes that millions of americans will, maybe, finally learn to stop gyrating between brake and gas during their everyday drive. :p

Using the momentum of braking to charge the battery seems smart. I wonder if they would have supplemental brakes in case of an emergency

That's why I added (reason!) and the main reason I have no plans to ever buy one.

I just took a look at Rivian's website. There's no transfer case of any sort, just tons of torque everywhere.

When gas isn't a billion dollars a gallon and Magnuson cracks the 21-22 ECU for tuning, I'll be all over that supercharger kit. Solves that problem

Solar panels? I’m wondering if some of these jackery type battery packs will be able to provide a charge when you run out of juice.

Just like not paying attention to your fuel gauge and running out. I’m sure someone will, if they haven’t already, make a back up battery pack to quick charge for a small amount of juice.

The supercharger kit is pretty awesome. Good to know the tuning isn't ready for 21-22!

I emailed Magnuson about it, they’ll put you on a notice list when they get the tuning available. I think it’s the perfect amount of power upgrade, should come from the factory around that power output.

The reason I like the Rivian approach is they're using 4 motors.

I feel as though current battery tech is a stopgap for something better in the future. Eventually, we'll hit "peak lithium", the price will sky rocket, economies will be rocked, blah blah blah.

I was hoping fuel cells would be the future, but doesn't look like that's ever going to take off.

    Regarding the Magnuson supercharger:

I am co-owner of YotaWerx Tuning and we have our NA tune for the 2010-19MY 4Runners, and we're excitedly awaiting 2020+ tune support via VFTuner which we expect to become available soon, especially as we receive daily inquiries about it.

For 2020+, Toyota went to a gen 2 ecu with tighter encryptions as part of the tech refresh/update they did, so tuning hasn't been available yet. I'm willing to bet VFTuner will enable access first and so Magnuson will likely use VF for their SC tunes like with the 3GTacoma.

What does the NA tune accomplish? Do you have any Dyno sheets? Just curious.

Just wait for the rolling black outs also predicted when more people start charging cars. It happens already in California and this year the potential exists through areas of country.

I have some friends at the Detroit energy company (DTE) and they are being told we are at high risk here with demand for electricity and the push shut down the coal plants. Apparently with AC and other demand this summer it’s a high risk for rolling blackouts.

It seems to me society is putting the cart before the horse with this technology.

I am not yet ready to give in to this transition, I’ll keep buying my gas

If Toyota behaved like Jeep, their vehicles would be like jeeps. No Toyota owner wants that.
