Oh wow thank you for taking a look and posting pictures, this community is awesome! Looks like I will have to take my rack system down that I just installed but, no pain no gain here :p. I feel so much better about this fix job now

yes. pull on the rubber molding and you'll see the edge of the liner. look inside, you'll see those clips pressed into the metal. get a clip removal tool and just pull :)

Any resolution on this? I actually did the same damn thing. Unfortunately damn near all my nylon plugs fell in. I have already ordered 4 replacements and plan on dropping the headliner this weekend.

question, what is the purpose of these? Are they just to keep water out? Can I achieve the same with rivet nuts and silicone?

This picture kinda shows exactly what it is. A bracket with two nuts welded on with those plastic doohickeys. Rivet nuts seems much easier but the dropping headliner option seems much safer

    All of them.
For what it’s worth rivnuts are super simple to install as @Oldtoyotaguy said he installed 4 in his roof I did as well for my front runner. If you can find a rivnut that fits in the factory hole then you’re half way there. But me personally I’d still want the part that fell into the headliner out. Especially knowing there’s air bags up there.

Good point. Don’t want shrapnel flying out if they ever get deployed.

Want to say thanks for all the feedback on this, saved me a lot of money doing it myself. I ended up pulling from the b pillar trim back and that gave enough room for me to drop the headliner enough to get my hands in to reattach the brackets and attach my rack an rtt. Happy wife happy life.

This is great info from all thanks, I just got my truck back from body work and they had to remove te driver side of my front runner rack and didn't install correctly so its leaking. I don't trust them to fix it again so I'm gonna do it myself again. Just in case my retainer clips arent in the right place what holds the Clips in place when no bolts are in? so what holds them to the body thanks first time posting

oh ok thanks, that makes sense. Do you know if those clips can be purchased at Toyota as well? Are they even needed? I don't think mine are broken but since the repair shop put it back together and its leaking I'm planning for the worst and fixing it myself the right way, that way I know its sealed.

    Look at post #42

they are needed if you want oem nuts as the item bolts screw into it.

This slides into a clip which is welded to the truck

Ok that’s good to know. Thanks again I’m getting all my ducks in a row in case it leaks again after they say they fix it
