    If you are dead set on a tent why not do it right and get some crossbars from an aftermarket company like LFD Off-road or Rago. Can use the stock rack, add these crossbars, and no issues if you want to have the tent up there for years

    you can use the stock side rails and Thule crossbars no problem. I've had my CVT up there for 2 years + non stop on that setup. You can't, however, use the stock crossbars that came with the Runner, they're not strong enough. Mainly because the ends are plastic.
    And CVT is the way to go IMO. I've had my tent since 2012, slept in it for probably a combined total of over 300 nights in that time and its still holding up pretty good. little wear and tear but still a solid tent. I believe they do discounts for forum members too. Just mention that you belong here.

    its still up there...and Runner's still sitting in the driveway. only had a couple of bites on it so far and one couple wanted to lowball me on the price. took some restraint not to laugh in their faces.
