    Hardly!
Grease the shaft at next service and change the diff oil at 30k.

You guys are fine, I promise.

Driveshaft greasing and differential oils are often neglected by the general public. I don’t think I can get myself to slide around under there every 5k miles personally.

Just bought my first 4Runner (going to pick it up on Saturday) and want to do the maintenance myself. This is awesome and so helpful! Thank you!

Did both front and rear diffs at 30k miles. Rear diff looked liked it needed to be changed right at 30k miles. Front diff looked good and I could have gone another 30k miles without changing (but I’ll keep doing it at the same time as the rear diff, it’s cheap and I’m already down there…)

I make sure I do at the very least the monthly 10 miles in 4wd. In the winter I usually drive a few hundred miles in the snow when I go skiing and the weather is bad but that’s about it. I would guess I’ve probably done less than 5k miles in 4wd by the time the ODO reached 30k miles

The important parameter for differential turns out to be max temperature reached more than mileage. The reason is that the differential fluid breaks down faster with higher temperature. At low temperature, the interval is infinite.

    This is from https://eastcoastgearsupply.com/ft-2536-ecgs-gear-oil-recommendation.html

The higher the temperature reached, the shorter the interval, that's why with new gears the interval is short because temperature goes up high, and after towing, or other heavy use like offroading.

Are there any thoughts, experiences, or conventional wisdom with breaking them loose and re-tightening before 120K?

I’ve read that most plugs have plated threads to prevent seizing and OEMs recommend to not grease or use antiseize on them. I’m guessing that by breaking them free to check them early might remove some of that plating making them more likely to seize later.

I had an independent mechanic change my plugs at 100,000 miles and he said they looked almost new. Very little wear. And he didn’t have any trouble removing them.

Our 5th Gen plugs are iridium, designed for 120,000 miles. The platinum tipped ones were 60,000 miles.

Thanks. I knew about anti seize but not about the plating. Learning every day...
