There's no way the 4runner could do a brake stand! :D

I guess I'd like to know where the guy was when it happened. If he was already in the turn in front of the store, he had very little time to react. If his foot was jammed under the brake pedal, that would make it impossible to stop.

I should see if there's any follow up to the story, so I can make a better judgement. It's just always easy to blame the driver. It was probably his fault, but I didn't read anything that could make me condemn the guy entirely.

they sure can do brake stands when you turn off traction control.

very true, Im sure the families of the vitcims will file individual lawsuits against this guy and toyota. We’ll all find out the truth at some point.

I suppose I haven't really tried. Heck, my '85 Celica could do one with like 110 horsepower. :D

OK, so I have 3/4 tank of gas full 34 psi in the tires and left all of the safety controls on, didn’t turn anything off as I’m sure that guy didn’t. I jammed on the gas and hit the brakes. My car barely made it 5 feet and it just revved to 2000 maybe 2200 against a stall converter. Never push through the brakes. Almost sent myself through the windshield when I hit the brakes.

I repeated it three times and could not get it to go any farther than 5 feet maybe 7 feet from my starting position.

decided to turn the traction control off. Slammed on the gas hit the brakes, right Tire spun a little bit. Also, maybe 5 to 7 feet of vehicle movement going forward.

also try to jam my foot between the brake and accelerator to get it stuck. It didn’t work just popped right underneath the brake pedal and the revs stopped. Try to jam it against the right side of the trans tunnel and accelerator and was able to pull my foot right back out no problem within a second. Forgot to note I am wearing my ASICS size 12 trail sneaker.

    this guy is fucked.

How fast were you going when you hit the brakes? Remember, the guy was probably already moving. And, he wasn't prepared to use his left foot to brake.

So, get yourself going about 10-15 mph, then floor it, wait 2 seconds, and then hit the brakes with your left foot. Then let me know how far you went. ;)

I know everyone else does practice drills for when their foot gets stuck on the gas pedal, but maybe it took the guy a second to even figure out WTF was happening

    .
So, you think it was intentional?

If it was, the guy definitely deserves to rot in jail. I tried to find some follow up, but I didn't find anything very helpful.

not sure 5-10 mph and maybe 2 seconds for my brain to go oh shit and hit the brakes.

when i do this 10-15 mph roll, then WOT, should i also do it under a full moon as well? Come on now…

who does a “got foot stuck drill”? Either way, the car stops and/or I can pull my foot up and out if needed so not sure what this guys problem was but he’s got 20+ problems now.

I’m not sure if it was intentional, but it’s still reckless and he was not in control of his vehicle. The DA will most likely have a field day with him criminally as well as the attorneys representing the families civily who were injured and killed.

Not sure about Massachusetts, or PA, but in Texas there are 4 levels of criminal culpability, intentionally being the highest. But there are also knowingly, recklessly and with criminal negligence. I’d say he’s fucked in civil court but, depending on how much money he can spend on counsel, he would probably skate here other than maybe being found to have been negligent.

Glad your referred to “normal human reaction time” here. AKA, the “oh shit factor”. Defined as the time it takes for the human brain to comprehend some threat, before ever sending a reaction to the body, in the case of a crash, slamming on the brake or steering to avoid the crash. That time has been held in court to be 1.8 seconds (again, here in Texas). So if he was going 10, in 1.8 seconds he covered just under 27 feet before he ever even would have touched the brake. And that’s assuming lots of stuff like, he wasn’t intoxicated, he wasn’t physically or mentally impaired, thus increasing his reaction time.

is there any information regarding if he was moving or this occurred from a standstill?

also, cruising through a mall parking lot at 20 miles an hour while looking for an eyeglass store, seems pretty dangerous and neglectful in my opinion.

also, your one post says 53 feet and one now says 27?

I know nobody actually does drills. What I'm saying is that, sometimes when stuff goes wrong, it takes a second to realize what's even going on before you can react. I'm not saying the guy isn't a piece of shit or an idiot. But, I'm just trying to give the benefit of the doubt.

Plus, that is 2 seconds potentially at full throttle.

It was found that he didn't have any drugs or alcohol in his system. That's about as much as I read

So, do I seem crazy for thinking this could have just been a bad accident?

Maybe I'm biased because I know someone who had a very bad situation with one of those runaway Toyotas.

I'd like to think I could react better if I were in the situation being discussed. I'm just not sure.

Not sure. Could also be driver panic or simply not paying attention and looking left or right for an eyeglass place while youre driving into a store straight in front of you.

When you look at this video, you wonder why out 4runner guy couldnt stop this quick.

    Yeah, I don't know.

It looks like Apple is being sued for not having bollard's in front of the windows or doors the guy crashed through. That seems a little crazy to me, because at that rate every business should have bollard's surrounding their entire building. Where does it end?

It ends when Apple settles with the plaintiffs to avoid bad publicity and a corporate black eye. Insurance pays for the settlement anyway. And likely once that goes forward the district attorney will plea the criminal case down to a $250 fine so he/she can keep their 100% “conviction rate” and use it in their re-election campaign. Political business as usual.

next, some random guy that was standing in front of the Apple store will get sued because he didn’t yell out, “watch out here comes a car!!!”

Nothing more to add except that: the driver, the guy who got killed, and the judge are all named Bradley. What are the chances?
