Tie Rods and Wheel Bearings 4th gen

My 06 4Runner was taken to the shop for a wheel alignment and had been given the diagnosis that the Tie Rods and Wheel bearings needed to be replaced. this is fine but they wanted to charge $3000 for the service, is this expensive? it feels like a lot.

Am i able to do this myself with the right equipment? or is the issue big enough i should leave it to a team?

$3,000 is definitely too much. The wheel bearings (at least from my experience with my Tacoma) were like $350 for both, and that was for NSK assemblies from a member on Tacomaworld. You can do those yourself if you have some tools and time. In itself those aren't too hard to change. You'll need a torque wrench that goes up to 250ft/lbs as i believe the torque setting for the wheel nut is like 180-190ft/lbs or something. Again, i'm speaking from Tacoma experience, but i don't imagine the 4runner process being much different.

Is your 4runner a 4WD or 2WD? I did make the mistake when doing my Tacoma wheel bearings, on the first one, i didn't seat the CV axle correctly, and started cranking down on the wheel nut and realized it wasn't going back together correctly, so just something to look out for. I won't make that mistake again. If yours is 2WD then the whole process gets a lot easier as you don't have to deal with CV axles.

I have no clue about the Tie Rods, haven't done those ever, but can't image they make up the other $2,500 of their quote.

 

I don't have a link for tie rods, but RockAuto will have some as well as Amazon. You can source the hub/bearing aasy & seals elsewhere as well. Some come with the seals some don't. You will need an alignment after you do the work.

$200 per hour seems more and more common in metro Minnesota area. It could easily hit over a grand just for the labor, next add parts with mark up and taxes and $3000 is not far off. SADLY!

 

Thanks much, i was able to fix the wheel bearings, but the tie rods where a lot more difficult since i needed to get an alignment too.
It is 4WD witch was the main issue with the process. ended up having to pay 2200 for the tie rods, and the alignment.
The tie rod boots did not ahow up with my order so it slowed the process a good amount

 

Just tie rods? Or did they replace other things, too?

 

2200 holy shit that seems high just for tie rods and alignment. Alignment couldn't have been more than $200. Which means tie rods costing $2k to install? Fkkkk
