Does the x-res suspension on a 4r really add value to and driving comfort? I am pondering buying one with this option and it adds to the overall cost.

It's only available on certain trims, so it adds whatever those trims come with (full time 4wd being one).

It's supposed to add stability. But, the shocks don't last forever. Once they wear out, you'll have to decide between a very expensive replacement, or switching to aftermarket shocks and ditching X-REAS.

I loved the X-Reas suspension on my 2010 Limited (daily driver, pavement pounder). I developed a leak in the front drivers side shock around 80k miles and still drove it to 130k miles before trading it in. The drop-off in performance was so gradual that I didn't really notice it until the end. That being said, when I priced a repair it was prohibitively expensive as if I remember correctly, it had to be a complete replacement and it was around $3 - 4k (Miami prices 2018).

I went from the X-Reas to an SR5 with the standard suspension and it is a VERY noticeable difference, especially the body roll and nose dive. It's so noticeable in fact that I am getting new suspension after the holidays. So yes, I love and miss the X-reas suspension but I do not miss the maintenance and replacement costs. I specifically went for an SR5 when I got a new one knowing that I was going to mod it the way that I wanted and in the end, I would be in it for the same cost, but have my truck set up exactly the way I wanted it.

i had a 16 sr5 premium and have a 22 limited. ride quality is a little better, but the big difference for me is in the curves, the lean is so much better than the sr5.

Too many mods and too much money
This is why a Bilstein or Eibach upgrade is done to the SR5 and the similar trims with those basic oem suspensions.
Last year we put an Eibach kit on my Son's 1st gen Tundra. Installed it in an afternoon. The ride is remarkably good.
Think it was around $600 shipped.

Thanks for the replies, and confirms my thinking about x-res. Toyota 'folks' poo-poo it for some reason. I tested a limited with it, and I couldn't tell if being new was the comfort or the x-res. I thought it made a big difference.
