Ha, have a friend that just sold his RTT. He used it three times in 3 years, drove around with it on his roof everyday. Tent is easy and portable, or if I'm lazy, sleep in the back of the 4R.

I will say, though, I have actually considered putting the ones below back on, due to the ones above being pretty hot in the summer and freezing cold in the winter...

Lame if one drives around with it permanently attached, for sure. To throw it on on for trips makes sense, I would use it to carry firewood.

I liked the idea of rooftop tents and looked into them, until I realized you can't drive anywhere after you set up camp. I usually go on 3 or 4 day camping trips so that just seems like a stupid system for me.

Snorkels, I can't find any website that shows scientific data from testing these to see if they really live up to the claims. Everyone talks about how great they are. Not one company has published any data.

I think there is a difference between cosmetic mods and mods that should be functional but are worthless. I will never, ever, put a ladder on my 4R.

Worst mod... I'd say my wheels, paid an arm an a leg for them... should just bought oem steelies, powder coated them white, and called it a day. Love the classic look. Or instead of spending the coin on lift/wheel/tires should of installed front and rear e lockers.

That looks brilliant but when I checked out the reviews on Amazon I saw more than a few people reporting that it dented the sheetmetal where that black bumper makes contact. One guy said it dented his 2017 4Runner. I imagine that metal there is thinner on some cars than on others. There's another brand with a somewhat different design that looks heavier duty, but likewise a number of reviewers said it dented their door jams. I'm guessing no such prob for you?

No issues with that. Our door jams seem pretty solid to me.

I'm also 170lbs so maybe someone who's 225lbs would have a different experience.

Have you tried it on a back door or only the front? I'd like to have one of these on hand, but those reviews spooked me.

Those things are for what you would call thin people. Id peel that door latch right through the sheet metal.

Yes, used it on both. No issues with the back doors. The step isn't perfectly level in back, but it's still very usable.

If you're a bit weary about it, I would buy through Amazon and try it out. Easy return if you don't think it'll work.

LOL, I think the door latches are designed to take a ton of pressure. Safety standards. The bad reviews have been about it denting the sheetmetal below the latch -- the other pressure point in this design.

I like the FJ shifter, had one for a while... I like that it matches the 4wd shifter... but it's not heavy enough. I realize that's a dumb complaint but I want something substantive that feels solid when you snick it into gear, especially when using 'S' mode a lot. The Ellis are knobs are my jam, I really like them.

5th gen Exhaust Tip. The end of 5th gen tailpipe is turned down at about 20 degree and putting exhaust tip on it looks like a terrible afterthought in my opinion.

I've never liked exhaust tips in the first place. You can almost always see the transition between the pipe and the tip anyways, so what's the point?

I took the chrome tip off mine pretty shortly after I brought it home.

    Yes.

Basically if it's something that looks like a Mexican would buy from JC Whitney and install in triplicate on his car, you don't want it. Exhaust tips are a good example of this.

That's precisely why I like them, and haven't seriously considered switching back to the FJ & stock TC knob. The oem TRD transmission shift knob is huge and feels like you're shifting with a cucumber.

I was also going to say the FJ knobs look like dildos but I didn't want to offend. I'm glad you brought it up.

I like the looks of the Teton Workshop shifters:

Agree, sorta. If I had to do it again, id get the rear panels that would allow be to bolt stuff in. I happened to purchase ones without the holes and just the panels.

It is on my list to replace, and might even go the AlphaFoxTrot route…maybe

Having threaded holes makes them slightly more useful. Not worth getting a set of new panels just for that IMO.

I used these thingies to mount a fire extinguisher. The thingies clip on and can slide a bit in either direction for a bit of flexibility.
