Weight is always an issue vs protection. We each make our choices based on our goals. I am right at the limit for the GVWR.
I put my protection under the runner and the weight I have in the rear is a 24 gallon auxiliary gas tank and my Dometic DZ95 fridge. To each his/her own. :)

It's a touch keypad entry system, an option regionally available for those in the Southeast Toyota region (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsixlFLg9SA) and meant to be installed on the windshield. Seemed too obtrusive on the windshield so I wasn't interested until I stumbled across this Reddit post with it installed on the rear quarter window - out of the way and discreet, which checked the right boxes for me.

I like where you put the keypad. Mine was port installed on the windshield. Didn't want it, but all the many options were take it or leave it. After four months of ownership, I like it.

Does these make the vehicle more secure or less... just wondering rationale for the mod... My two cents

That is a very good location to have that vs windshield. Wish I have that vs carrying my keys in "waterproof"ish pouch.

Used it to take boat trailer tires R& R rims @ place I bought Cooper Discoverer S/T MAXX 26k ago Very happy W/them. They told me Goodyear now owns Cooper. Glad it’s them & not Firestone!
Here's one of the 2 trailer tires I had re-mounted & Bal. today Actually I put the spare on the one OEM wheel & giving the one that got a little hole damaged to my buddy for a spare.Installed W/Locktite 242 TQ's to 90ftlb & Torqued striped for easy visual Insp.! Had one get loose coming home, snapped stud, 1 lug nut at end of stud. Never in my (too many years yeah I'm old) of doing my own tire R&R or rotation using (this time Milwaukee M18 Impact gun) with never Re-Torque. I guess the Batt was low on the 2nd wheel install is the only explanation I have. Just glad my hearing is still good after all these years around turbine Eng./Rotor blades. I heard clicking echoing off center cement barrier tat I stopped to find what I did!! So glad that wheel did NOT leave the trailer!!! I always am looking in rear mirrors, didn't see it shaking. This is all from the blow out coming home weekend before 4th. So I R&R Both OEM trailer tires. 4Runner never did anything but hold true on the blow out or on the wheel coming loose. This is towing a 19.5 Chaparral V6 Mercruiser W/gear & near full fuel too. P.S. Tire looks low psi in pic BUT serviced to 65 PSIG per tire. will re check after towing back & forth tomorrow on Sun for proper cold PSI

I can only imagine burning your fingers on a hot windshield while you enter the code.

Is there a max number of tries? When I was younger, my uncle would let me guess the combination on his Lincoln. Didn't take long.

This is interesting. Do you have a write up somewhere on the install? How easy/difficult was this to install?

Will this work for all models? I have a 2015 SR5P.

    Thanks!

    Here is the instruction document.
    http://toyotaparts.sparkstoyota.com/install/00016-00506-22-4runner.pdf
The Reddit poster said he only got the keypad kit (00016-00506-DL), the installation kit (00016-00506-DK) is not needed.

Interested for the OP to respond with his installation tips. And if this will work on non push-to-start models pre-2019.

Probably no less secure than other vehicles that have similar systems. For me, it provides the convenience of unlocking the vehicle when I need something out of it and don't have the keys handy. There are also situations where I don't want to take my key with me so it gets locked in the ConsoleVault (in a faraday bag). Both are infrequent, but helpful when I need it.

I don't know if there is a limit to the number of tries. Agree that could be a risk, but the potential thief would have to know it was there (uncommon feature in a unique location).

I found the install guide via Google search and used tips shared by the Reddit poster. I had to extend the wiring and open a few more interior panels but that was the only added complexity.

Nothing too challenging with the installation; no tips come to mind beyond the directions in the doc and the recap by the Reddit poster.

Regarding pre-2019 - please confirm fitment on your own but I see no reason why it would matter whether you had push to start or not. It basically ties into the door lock/unlock circuit (lock, unlock, power, ground, acc).

I have a Sperry & I can't remember digital multi meter. Used Flukes at work for too long, now I'm in Mgt BUT When I see those flukes I just wantta buy one for the sake of owning one. The wife gives me crap for buying tools but I still do as W/Ammo/Guns & hopefully a new CBR1000RR to go W/HD!

Who cares? This never shows everything anyway.
Oof, if I was going to spend that kind of money on a swing out tire carrier, I'd buy a Rigd one. It's more versatile and has more accessories.

Good on ya. Just bought a new lil gun myself this week. I still have the old, cheap analog meter my step dad let me have when i was 15. The thing still works great to. I also, got into fluke set ups at work, and now own a shit ton, when a few places i worked at, bought them for us years ago. No one does that anymore, thats for sure. Happy shooting, wheeling, and riding mate.

I upgraded my maps with this chip. I don't have a smart phone so I rely on the nav. system in the 4Runner. I figured it best to keep it updated and for $40.00 it's not too expensive.

Upgraded my tires from the Dunlop’s to Toyos. I kept it stock size since I don’t plan lifting the truck till warranty is up. Ride still seems quiet … granted not on a concrete hwy, just tarmac roads at 60-80 kms an hour.

While not done today been working on it for some time and finally got to try it out on a recent trip. Shower setup version 3.0. This version with an awning bonus. While not a frequent user of an awning because I move a lot I thought to come up with an awning that did not add additional weight to the 4Runner's top or required additional parts. While I have seen the many simple and light choices I did not want to add more parts.

Nonetheless, this is what I came up with. Found these rails that weigh near to nothing and are commonly used in the marine industry (https://www.sailrite.com/Flex-A-Rail-Black-90-Long) to attach fabric by simply sliding the fabric through the rail, for example, a shower curtain. Attached with 3M VHB tape to the inside of the hatch, for the shower, are two black rails. Attached on the outside roof, also with 3M VHB tape, are two white rails, one on each side of the 4Runner. Will they last the test of time or Arizona's heat? Time will tell. On the passenger's side, it can be used for changing or using the toilet. On the driver's side it's a regular awning. Or two awnings at the same time--going from no awning use to overuse, pun intended. The rails allow the curtain to slide in and out on either side and as needed. The idea came from needing a place to hang the curtains after showering. Initially, I used magnets but was not sure the magnets would hold if a wind came along. Anyhow, all rails worked, the shower, and awning. The toilet side needs a bit more thought as it's a bit short on the viewing side. Maybe a notch in the rail to lower the curtain through earlier. The poles I use for assessing the depth of muddy water before driving through or not.

    IMG_8706.HEIC.jpg IMG_8683.HEIC.jpg IMG_8684.HEIC.jpg IMG_8686.HEIC.jpg IMG_8703.HEIC.jpg IMG_8705.HEIC.jpg

Lastly, for those who asked about the window covers and the windows going up and down. All the covers stayed in place, no light gets in or out and in that sense better than the WeatherTech covers, and even with keeping it somewhat cooler inside, if possible in Arizona's summer. All the windows go up and down and the film has stayed in place. I was surprised too. Having said that, it is the first trial. A year from now who knows if it lasts with using the window?

For all of you out there who bring your cars to the dealer for oil changes please watch this. He used to work for Toyota for years, he knows what he's talking about. You think they are using Toyota oil? They are not. The more you know.

I hardly ever use the running boards but my wife needs it to get in. I don't care for the look of the stock one either. Swapped them out to the trail edition boards instead as a compromise. Sliders are nice but can't justify the cost as I won't be taking any challenging trails in the near future. Definitely do like the design and the fact they sit tighter to the rocker panel. Not bad considering it'll be a free upgrade after I sell my stocks lol

Yes, there is a picture of a 4Runner. not sure if you meant that, or a blue person in CGI from the movie Avatar? :)

Hey everyone, first post. Brought home a new to me 2021 4runner ORP, (Sunday). First Toyota in 42 years of driving. Last vehicle was a 2015 Chevy 2500 Duramax LTZ 4x4. The ORP doesn't have the get up and go but rides nicer. Can't wait to get out in the dirt and start modifying of course.
