I worked in the Yukon in the late 1970s and early 80s doing field work in the Aishihik valley, which at the time had the highest grizzly bear population in North America. I saw bears from helicopters all the time, but on the ground, I never observed one. I asked the Game Branch bear biologist if I should carry a gun, and he said to do whatever was comfortable for me, but unless I was a really good shot under pressure, and/or really lucky, my safest bet would be to carry a whistle. A really sharp, high powered life guard whistle. So, that’s what I did. It was a lot easier to carry than a gun, and I never doubted it would work. Animals generally avoid humans, unless they’re provoked or frightened.
And, I’m not anti gun. I’ve hunted and been around guns all my life.

Then maybe both would be called for, if the whistle doesn’t work then a slug from a 12ga. might. But avoidance would make me the happiest. I only want to shoot them with my DSLR.

It takes a lot of discipline when you’re carrying a gun not to make it the solution.

Come to Las Vegas, 87 days and counting, no rain. And when it does rain it's barely measurable. The problem is that the asphalt is 180 degrees in the summer. That's why a carry a rug.

That's about the same as what a carry when I'm not offroading. Except for the 2" ball. I do always have a hitch pin installed, it is the best place to hook a tow rope loop.

A hitch pin is a good light weight idea, but the safest would be a rated recovery shackle on a bar in the receiver. There are a few different kinds available, and they’re not expensive. I have recovery points on my after market bumper, but I still carry a shackle for the receiver.

Yes, but it is still the PIN that holds the shackle bar. Everything that is towed is held by the pin, so why not just put the pin through your loop and save money, weight, and space? :)

Hes got a point. I've used one like that multiple times to pull and F350 out of the mud with the 4runner.

Maybe the pin could bend, and become stuck in the receiver? Or, the strap could rub on the edge of the opening and wear through eventually? I don't know, I'm just guessing here. My hitch shackle mount was only ~$25 and doesn't take up much space.

Lol, no the hitch pin won't bend. I think you could tow a tractor trailer without bending a hitch pin.

Either way, it seems like it would be a pain in the ass to try to slide a strap in there. I'd rather just use equipment that was designed for it.

Yeah, built it myself. PSA 5.56 10.5 upper with FatBoi muzzle brake, PSA lower with SBR4.

Why don't you have a stock on it if it's an SBR?

    Sorry, I mistyped, it’s a SBR4 brace/stock according to PSA.

I think he was asking if it is a pistol or an SBR. I'm assuming it's a pistol since it has the brace on it. I just bought an SB4 they're pretty sweet!

Ahh, gotcha. It’s a pistol. I’m not keen on all the civilian nomenclature for these. It’s a damn AR and will soon be class III and suppressed once my stamps come through and I put the full auto innards in it.
