I don't want to be that guy, but do a quick search. 33 (285/70/17) is the most popular size for these, pretty much every day there's a new thread on this very subject.

There's a few variables depending on what tire and wheel you want to run, and what you want to do with it.

Depends what you mean by 33? Technically most 285/70s are less than 33”, but a 255/80 are 33”. Pizza cutters supposed to be less modifications, better with stock rims, less stress for steering, less mpg impact, maybe risk of stiffer ride due to only E load vs SL or C load being offered for 285s. I’m going through this dilemma now on which way to go.

I went the cheapest route possible and bought a Daystar KT09134BK 2.5" lift off of Amazon for $100 or so. I installed it myself and was able to fit Cooper 285/70/17 Evolution MTs on stock rims...

    f2v_L8cuQZSxuINFy2XWaw.jpg

Then I switched tires to the Goodyear Wrangler UltraTerrain in the exact same size, but they are actually a true 33" tire and on the stock rims, required a little bit of trimming.

    6qgrQ8GBRca0U2DASyZPAw.jpg

And then when I went to an aftermarket rim that was 9" wide with a -12 offset, it was extreme rubbing...

But, with stock rims or stock rim width and offset specs, you can run most brands of 285s with a cheap 2.5" spacer lift and retain stock ride quality and not stress anything.

Fitment for every 4Runner is going to be a little different. Some people will say "no rubbing" some will say they had to make some cuts. Generally, wider tires and/or negative offset will require trimming(trim front bumper/BMC).

This SR5 got ReadyLift 3in front & 2in rear kit running BFG KO2 285/70R17 on stock SR5 wheels. No BMC, No plastic trimming, No removal of mud flaps. Had some rubbing on lower part of the front bumper but after couple of trail runs looks like the tires did the trimming on behalf :p

I had the same lift on my SR5 but I didn't like the rear shocks topout on trails.

Lift doesn't clear tires, unless you never leave pavement.

33's can be usually cleared with a good alignment and some plastic trimming.

From experience I'd recommend doing a level of minimum 2" in the front, get the 285/70R17 (don't do the more rare extra wide sizes), 9" or under rim width, most importantly stay away from large negative offset rims those trajectories rub.
Worst case scenario, everybody is capable of deleting their front mud guards, and getting their hands on a dremel to slightly trim bottom of front fender.

Do you know if he has aftermarket UCA's? I'm in a similar situation, I just lifted with Eibachs lift kit (3" front/2" rear) on my Sr5 (with SR5 wheels)

Was he able to get proper alignment on 33's?

Stock UCA. Pretty much even at Toyota dealership when this ReadyLift kit is installed stock UCA is used. I don't remember any complains of alignment. This is a low cost lift. Since you have a better lift "Eibach lift kit" with 3in front its def a good thing to have good UCA.
I will see if he has done any alignment recently and get the sheet.
