Someone asked about light duty skids. Tough (and/or expensive) to get light plus strong.
Plastics are good against punctures and scrapes but they flex easily so you could still damage parts behind the skid.
Matching the coefficient of thermal expansion is tricky as well when you start mounting plastic on metal. UHMWPE for example is about 10x that of steel if I remember correctly. Means you could fab a perfect part in winter and in summer none of the bolt holes would line up.

I reinforced stock skids with 1/8" flat bar pieces in key spots and made UHMWPE skins. Specifically made them on a day with mild temperature and oversized all mounting holes to allow for it to expand/contract. It's not as much protection as "real" skids but better than stock alone. And for front, mid, and gas tank it added less than 20lb total.

Anyway, an idea for you guys:
I like the way stock skid is wide such that it can deflect debris away from suspension. I've never seen aftermarket skids for 4R or Tacoma that are as wide as stock. Maybe make a bolt-on optional "splash shield" that would extend to the sides a bit more off of your standard skid.

Jigs are made, the rear bumper is finalized. Just need to finalize the carriers! More photos coming soon.

That looks great. How much cutting/trimming is required?

Requires some, the wings and the center section is only the front valance. So you keep all of the grill.

With most things you will mount, you can simply lift the notched side of the crossbars to install your hardware. With a RTT that is a little more difficult, so you have two other options. You can use RTT mounting brackets (there are lots of options) that raise the tent up from the crossbars. You can also do what I did quickly before a long trip and remove the factory rails with the crossbars attached, mount that to the tent and then place it back on the roof.

Do you have a picture so I can get a visual?
Wouldn't the second option be a lil heavy for one person?

    Thank you

I'm sorry, I don't have a good photo close up. I have a full rack installed now so I can't take more for you.
The factory rails don't add much weight to the tent. I'd recommend two people to lift a tent on anyway.

It's okay' Thanks for the picture. That is a nice setup..

So this is totally off topic but I should ask anyways.
I got a Molle panel for my birthday thru you're company and well I love it but my only issue is that I have a 3rd row and the housing will not allow the panel to sit flush against and be aligned to where I have it supposed to be mounted.
Chris offered me a return and refund but I actually want to keep it because I think it's very well made but it might not have been thought out for the 3rd row housing issue.

Can you recommend me some tips of what I can do to level it flush before I start my improvisations.

    Thanks Jenn

Thank you, it's a great way to go if you aren't looking for a full rack!

We have had someone who made it work with a third row. You can add washers or some type of spacers to move the panel further out. It will likely still rest against the seat belt housing area so if you are worried about it you could put something (like foam tape) on the back of the panel in that area to protect the interior.

    You're welcome

I was thinking already of the foam tape as that was my main concern.
I will try the washers as I didn't think of that.

I will let you know how it turns out once I attempt the adjustments and fix.
    Thank's again

Jen, you might try rubber washers, they come in different thickness. Just a thought.

The steel bumper with tube, weighs about 115lbs. The aluminum version would weigh about 57.

That would mean an upgraded suspension system forsure for added weight?

I'm assuming stock bumper will have to be cut for this bumper to fit..

Sorry, I didn't see the second part of the post. Yes, the stock front bumper plastic needs to be cut. The center grill pieces do not!

No hurry. Can only buy so many expensive car mods per year and this year is roof rack year.

Just curious if there will be an option for no bull bar and/or medium height version for the front bumper (just a but to high for my liking). Not to mention, will it affect 4Runner owners with KDSS?

Yes! It will be available with or without the tube work. KDSS will not impact the bumper in any way.
