Very cool! I was at Lackland in Jan of 1998 and then Keesler through Oct '98. Ex-wife was a source of my getting out way too early..so I couldn't tell you my MOS (just can't remember the number and not at home to look at my paperwork) but I was Aircraft Guidance and Control on the EC-130E. Ended up stationed at Davis Monthan AFB in Tucson. The Boneyard.. I grew up in Europe as an Army brat, so my first request was Ramstein..didn't luck out though

The Ret. Major General went on to lead project manager for the new Woodrow Wilson bridge project. Got it done ahead of schedule and under budget. Now has a part in the new Army museum under construction. They delivered a Sherman Tank and built the walls around it can’t wait to see one in person. I will be spending Christmas with him.

MOS 11B10- infantry. Drafted US Army Jun 1968
    Ft Ord basic training
    Ft Ord AIT training.
    M60 machine gunner.
Spent 2 weeks in hospital with walking pneumonia while the rest of my unit shipped to Vietnam. Had to stay at Ft Ord extra 30 days while new orders were cut for me. Then shipped to Schoefield Barracks Hawaii, and assigned to the 29th Brigade. After about a year, 25th Infantry replaced the 29th Brigade and I was assigned to it. Spent the rest of my tour in Schoefield Barracks Hawaii, and discharged in July 1970. Hated the military and would D4030829-2209-4A1C-908A-10B89B120D70.jpg never re-up.

    Phantom,

I remember being a Corporal for 39 months. Talk about being demotivated! Can't get promoted when the field is frozen!

That was the trouble. Dead MOS, since they were getting rid of F-4's, going to the F/A-18s.

Out of a field of 7 Sgt.s, 4 got promoted to SSgt. in the 7 years I wore three stripes. 1 got it as a consolation prize for flunking OCS as a Fatbody, 1 actually deserved the promo, one ws junior to me in all ways, including fit-reps, but apparently "knew" someone, and the last cross-decked to another MOS that needed SSgts badly.

I got out as the last of the F-4 went to the boneyard. F/A-18 radars were set up so a trained chimp could fix them. Plug the plane into a computer, it told them what LRU to replace, we got the LRU, a box, plugged it in, it told us what board to replace. No more trouble shooting to a component, and then replacing it. Pull a board out, in goes a new one, done.
I wasn't going to spend 8-10 months out of a year doing that, on a boat. Besides, I doubled my salary by getting out and taking the job I did, right then. Then, after 2 years dealing with the Israeli's, and wasn't THAT an adventure, I got the job as the lead E-Tech on the the survielance balloon. Stayed there, through the take-overs by the Air Force, and then Lockheed, whom I really didn't like, I retired for medical reasons. Almost 20 of my 30 years in Yuma were with the Balloon.

Sorry, I ramble down memory lane sometimes...

    Phantom,
I completely understand. I have seen Marine's get promoted that couldn't lead a pack of drunks to happy hour! I have found the Gov contracting gig to be well worth my time and their money.

Late 70's-early 80's: I was just a clerk (0151) attached to a Recon plt. I saw the crazy shi/stuff that the guys did, the platoon was indeed in need of 'counseling', they were tight and made my job easy. My hat's off to everyone of those cats! Now if typewriters could be called a 'weapon'.... doubt it! Semper Fi!
