@MyWyfsRnnr - I finally, after weeks and weeks (10 actually) of waiting, got a decent day to install my hood decal. It turned out to be a disaster.

I followed your instructions to a T, and was actually almost finished, then realized it wasn't exactly straight side to side. I forgot to measure each side from the edge of the hood, and it was off to one side. Most people would probably have not noticed and left it, but my OCD kicked in and I tried to fix it. It would not come off at that point, it had already adhered pretty well, and it stretched all out of shape trying to take it off. I probably could have managed it if I had gone slower, but got frustrated and yanked it off and tossed it in the trash. $50 and weeks of waiting down the drain.

Not your vinyl, by the way, although there was nothing wrong with the vinyl, just the installer. Your instructions were very good, and had I made sure the vinyl was straight prior to removing all the water from the back, it would have been perfect.

I don't know if I'll get another decal and try it again or not. Not leaning that way currently.

Note to all who do this project - once you have sprayed the back of the vinyl and the hood for application, then laid the vinyl down, make sure it is exactly where you want it while it's still wet before using the squeegee on it. That probably goes without saying, I just got in too much of a hurry and didn't double check.

What was the vinyl you got? Do you know what kind it was (manufacturer)?

They don't say what vinyl they are using. Interesting. That color chart looks like it is the old Vivid vinyl color chart. It is an ok quality vinyl. Well, I got some new pricing from the supplier I have been using and they gave a little break so I got mine down to $35 plus shipping if you decide to try again for the flat black. Sorry you had trouble, I totally understand the OCD! If I install them for people I typically lose money haha. If it doesn't look exactly right I will peel it off and start over with a new sheet. I think I ruined 3 or 4 on one members because I was in a rush on a hot hood. Let me know if you end up wanting one to try again!

I was actually quite happy with the vinyl, the color, and the look overall. Before I ruined it, that is...

I appreciate all your help, thanks. I think I'll try laying the decal still on the backing in place, and use a couple of pieces of masking tape for reference to get it straight. Then proceed with the wet application.

My decal came creased. Is that good. To be a problem during install? Or will it be fine? (Please see the pics below). 2D413F4E-AE71-4695-8E49-39855B0A40C9.jpgAD9349EA-141E-4215-9A85-521EA1F72A4C.jpg

That is not one of mine.... What type of Vinyl is it?
It might work out if it is an ok vinyl but those are pretty significant creases. I would ask the seller for another, that is damaged pretty bad in shipping. I usually have my customers return to sender and I deal with the post office insurance and I just send them a new one. I have lost a chunk of money due to the post office destroying my packages. I started insuring them (so the post office could keep denying my claims).

Just curious - your edit in Post #1 says the installation of the topo vinyl is different - what is the difference?

Any idea what you would charge for the SR5 hood with this wrap?

Sorry it took a min to get back to you, we had a death in the family and been dealing with that today. The topo vinyl is thicker so it doesn't get affected by static as much but it is more flexible and stretchy. If not careful the topo vinyl can be stretched out of shape pretty easily. The black retains it's shape better but is thinner and more susceptible to static etc. You have to handle both gently.

The SR5 does not have a scoop, are you thinking something like a hood stripe?

All, I spoke with my supplier today and they opened up a pretty big pallet of color options. With that in mind, I am literally doing this pretty much as a hobby so I can't order pink with yellow contours unless a few people want it. Any suggestions that you all want to see? I think I will get some grey with black lines and maybe a black with white lines. Let me know what YOU want to see and if there is enough interest I will order some

Success! Finally got this vinyl put on. @MyWyfsRnnr - you are right, this stuff wants to stick to itself! Spraying water on it solves any issues. It was touch and go for a minute; peeling the vinyl off the backing is the most challenging part. Once off and wet, it went on the hood exactly as described in the very comprehensive instructions included. A few minutes of removing the water with a credit card wrapped in glasses cleaning cloth, voila! Couldn't be better, thanks again! Anyone wanting to attempt this, use @MyWyfsRnnr's vinyl. You won't be disappointed, and the supplied vinyl sample pieces are a great help.

Pay no attention to the dirty hood in the photos...I left the rest that way so I could tell the area I was working on was perfectly clean:

    Literally, right?

TBH my earlier issues were with the installer, not the vinyl...

I'm a fan of the topo vinyl. Maybe a color that blends into nautical blue better?
I think the grey might work better than black.

Yeah, it is tricky to choose color because you have to choose "complementary" colors. The black would probably get a little lost on the blue but it would match the black "grill" in the hood scoop. I think I will order a grey with black contours on my next order.

Going to put together a group buy.... ( In placing my order yesterday, I asked for another discount and they came back with some numbers for me). I am going to post on the group buy section as soon as I figure out what it all means. I will note this thread as well with a link as soon as I get it all ironed out.

Man.. that sucks. I don't know if those creases will smooth out after installation. Mine came rolled up in a cardboard tube. I would bet that those creases may NOT smooth out. I would ask for a replacement if it was packed folded like that.

Genobilzgtr's didn't come from me, but that being said, I agree with the sellers course of action. That is the way I handle similar situations. You would be amazed at what the post office has done to some orders I have sent out. I even upgraded to "uncrushable" boxes which they have destroyed also. I am trying new tubes @$5 each. Going to test them a while and see if the "rate of destruction" goes down.
