Still dont understand why the 4Runners are getting sold when it hits the lot.
    I paid MSRP for mines.
That was in march. The dealership has added mandatory non-Toyota cosmetic and service packages totaling $2k on all their new/used vehicles.

So indirectly everyone buying new is now paying $2k above MSRP at that dealership

in 2020 I paid $3K less than MSRP. for my 4 runner. At the start of Covid the dealerships were giving away cars just to keep people at the dealership employed.

Silly! I am 60 years old and I have bought four new vehicles in my life including a 2002 Chevy Suburban that we still own, and it was a family needed vehicle and not a me needed vehicle. Two of my cars I have driven till they died. Donated one of them and got $400 trade-in on the other one. I am hardly enamored with new shiny cars.

At 41, I had never purchased a new vehicle until last year when I had gone to trade in my Yukon for a used GX. After 3 days during the worst of COVID in San Francisco, they could not get it to pass so a sweetheart deal was offered on a ‘21 GX. Had my Yukon been remotely drivable, I would have gone elsewhere.

After looking at the GX’s gaping maw for a few weeks, I simply couldn’t take it and got a KDSS ORP that was exactly what I wanted. Made it back to Humboldt and the next morning it got totaled by a girl blasting through a red light.
Was lucky to get a TRD Faux (Venture) with KDSS, but….

Regardless, between a worldwide pandemic and stunning amounts of derision in our country since 2016 (and before), I don’t fault anyone for doing whatever makes them happy. Life was already short but now…

Same here, bought my pro end of April 2020 for near invoice. 47 K... signed the deal and drove it off the lot as quickly as possible before they could change their minds.

I purchased mine in mid-March, 2021 for $1,800 off MSRP. If I had waited just two more weeks, I probably would not have received the discount.

Says the guy who prob paid way over invoice on his '21. Did your car die too? I'm talking about people purchasing new vehicles in a weird market and inflating prices

Exactly. People need to stop blindly following party lines and regurgitating party bullet points. That's just sheeple doing exactly what they want sheeple to do.

Looking at the graph, it seems more like the basically uninterrupted rise started closer to the late '20 time frame.

I paid MSRP. Have you bought fuel for your car in the last year? Have you bought groceries at the grocery store? Looks like you’ve been driving up the prices too. Or are we only counting things that have an “msrp” attached to them. Your comment was ignorant to a pretty nice guy on this forum. That’s all I’m saying.

Those items you're talking about are NECESSITIES, which new cars are not. I also ride a motorcycle to reduce my usage on a necessity. Anyone who went out and paid out the wazoo for a new vehicle just because they wanted one, during a time of limited inventory and after a pandemic exacerbated the the problem and increased prices dramatically for everyone. That's what I'm saying.

If you work a full time job that is in another town ,not near a train or bus station and is not in a city, within walking distance, then YES , a car (or truck)
IS a necessity. I could never buy groceries without my job ...........or my car to carry the groceries!

Unfortunately it’s going to change everyone’s life some for good and some not so good.

Perhaps this will encourage people to live closer to cities and not as far away from populated areas.

we can’t go where this conversation will take us, but prices did settle out mid 2020, and that’s to the cut backs in production, which is what the oil industry does. Squeezing every cent they can out of us for their commodity. Now the issue is what happens on that graph after the oil industry does their thing, and what the response was to the oil industry when the newest administration took over. Also, the current administration could care less, in fact wants the gas prices to sky rocket, it helps the EV push.

gas prices would have gotten back up late 2019 prices, but how much more is the question.

What would they take off the SR5 to make it an SR? I already kinda think the SR5 pretty much is their SR when you consider there’s an SR5 premium.

There are many many many people right now waiting on new vehicles that just don’t exist in numbers to satisfy demand. And car dealers are trying to stay in business and keep their employee’s families fed.

Charging $48k instead of msrp $46k seems… not entirely off base if there’s a line out the door waiting to purchase the vehicle? The world is a mess right now. Everybody is just trying to stay afloat. If some customers can afford to pay an extra couple thousand… and it pushes me out of the new vehicle market because I can’t afford the price increase… but it keeps the business afloat… that’s a good thing? I could always buy a used car for $2k less. Or $9k less.

I’m not arguing. Just offering another perspective. Generally, the free market does better than price controls… I think.

I mean, what actually is msrp? It’s pretty arbitrary, to be honest. I suppose it’s meant to be a starting place for negotiation. And right now that negotiation is trending upwards. We’re not used to that. But here we are.

But they’ll fix that. Before ya know it, those msrp’s are gonna be $4k higher and you’ll be happy again ;)

MSRP is just that: a suggested price for a dealer to stay in in business and make money. Dealers have to make profit to cover their overhead, pay salaries, pay building rent, taxes, insurance, interest on loans, etc, etc. I wouldn’t be surprised if the MSRP is invoice price plus 25%.

Common sense to why a lot of customers buying new cars. There are no used out there. I bought a 22 Camry and was not paying the same price for a used when it was the same new. I sold my 2003 Acura to a friend which was my work car. If you can afford to buy new then do it.

that's why I bought new. I usually like to buy something a year or two old with <30K miles on it - i.e. practically new but without the often quoted 20% depreciation as soon as you drive it off the lot. Well, today, 4runners fitting that description are $2-3K (or more!) more expensive than new. The only explanation I have for it is that they are immediately available, whereas we all know the waiting game for new.

I mean, look at CarMax. This one has an asking price of $61k. It's a 2022 with 6k miles. Assuming it has KDSS, MSRP should be $50k. CarMax is asking $11k over MSRP!!!

January 2021 is right AFTER it starts going back up after that level-off. Not that an administration is going to affect gas prices that much their first month, anyway, but it doesn't matter. They started going up before that.

Dude, just google "why are gas prices high" and click on a credible, non-political source and read up on it.
