LOL, an opinion piece from an oil guy panning EV's. Who would have thought. By the way, that picture could easily be a open pit coal mine which it probably is. And let us not forget about all the damage done to the environment by major oil spills and the leveling of entire forests for tar sands oil that remains polluted long after the oil is gone. I never understood why so many people outright hate EV's. I guess they are the same ones who hated the introduction of hybrids back in the late 90's. Now hybrids are everywhere and fully excepted by most except those who wish to remain ignorant. ICE vehicles are not going to disappear anytime soon so enjoy them if you wish and let those who want to drive an EV enjoy theirs.

We also hate battery powered chainsaws and lawn mowers because they suck. My Makita 18 volt weed eater does pretty good though. Battery powered weed eaters and drills are fine. I stick with corded on my saws and Sanders.

I am interested in the new home Depot Makita 18 inch mower that comes with four batteries for 399. Seems like a pretty pretty good deal if it has enough to torque for the tall wet grass

I have nothing against EV's, personally. I do have an issue with people calling them "green" and "zero emissions vehicles" though.

Here's another picture of a lithium mine. I'm not sure how much better this looks than the one in the article, though.

Edit: turned out to be a gold mine. It's damn near impossible to find a picture of a lithium mine. It's almost like Google doesn't want us to know what it really looks like.

Picture of a lithium field a few posts down (315).

I like EV and live on hill , I’m waiting for a all wheel drive EV mower. Trucks are to new , I never buy the first year of anything , when I was living in California in the early 90’s my company leased me a EV Ford Ranger was a partnership with GE , was lead acid batteries in the bed .
It was a great little truck , had to go back to the dealer once a month to top off the water in the batteries … Was a good little truck .
I’m not apposed to a EV just going to wait awhile , but if you guys see EV 4x4 mower let me know …LOL

If people want to buy one because they don't want to spend money on gas then thats fine. If its to save the planet, then maybe they should do a little research. Its like the people that talk about being vegan. If you are doing it so you don't have to eat the animals then fine, but if you say its for health then more research should be done.

No vehicle is good for the environment. When people say they're "green," they simply mean greener than oil. You can find articles all day long from non-political sources that agree they are.

Here's a lithium field. Looks pretty environmentally friendly.

Dude, new leases are not going to lower the cost of oii/gas. WTF is wrong with green energy? Are you not comfortable with anything new? This type of thinking goes back to the whole fuel injection/carburetor logic. Have you not noticed cars getting more efficient via hybrids? Do you not like more efficient vehicles? JFC

And we can show pictures of coal plants and oil spills, too. You're appealing to emotion here.

That's not my intention. Someone pointed out earlier that a picture of a so-called lithium mine was in fact not a picture of a lithium mine. So, I looked for a picture of an actual lithium mine. And, I posted the best thing I could find. And, then I pointed out that it does not look environmentally friendly.

I agree that oil spills are disgusting. I never said they weren't.

I'm not sure at what point I claimed to be a huge proponent of coal, so I'm not sure how that became relevant.

Edit: Although, I used to fish at a cooling pond for a coal power plant. It was loaded with large flathead catfish. That plant is now closed down. I will miss fishing there, but I'm not mad that they closed the power plant.

A little late to the party on this one.

I’m the type of guy that loves being specific with words. At their best, they transmit meaning quickly and accurately without confusion, or the need for grunting and pointing.

@Thatbassguy is right on this one. “Zero emissions” is marketing. It subtly, but quickly, transmits the idea of perfection when talking green tech. Words are powerful that way, and the little details have huge influence in how people think. Portions of society can even try to take the words over for their own benefit (for example the use of “eco” -with the green leaf- to imply the 4runner is running ecologically)

For a serious discussion on green tech, we need to replace the words zero-emissions to something else. So far, what this word has brought is the “torque wars” when it comes to EV development. Zero emissions is just an excuse to abuse battery packs and consume way more energy than you ever would with gasoline. If one is serious about being green, the term “zero-emissions” has put the field back years.

I think the conversation about “green technology” needs to be focused through the lens of “Energy Conservation”, because energy not spent does not pollute, does not have ecological impact, and does not cost money. The term “zero-emissions” only touches on pollution, and only in a deceiving way.

Im open to participating in the new naming committee. :p

    Here are some ideas:

    1. Outsourced Emissions Vehicle

    2. Concentrated Emissions Vehicle

    3. Diverted Emissions Vehicle

What a stretch, jeebus. Both of you need to look up the definition of "emissions". And what exactly is being emitted when an electric vehicle is going down the road? :boink: In a perfect world, sure that would be nice to have no pollution when a fuel source is produced. But guess what? Drilling/fracking oil etc pollutes not only when it's obtained, but also when used in vehicles. And expecting "cleaner" vehicles to be less expensive is asinine.

Toyota's not stopping at zero lol. They are going above and beyond. According to Toyota, the "beyond Zero" name is intended to convey the desire to provide customers with value that exceeds mere "zero emissions." The company described the bZ series as a "human-centered" approach aimed for regions such as China, North America, and Europe, where there is significant demand for BEVs

You mean like the emissions that are produced when manufacturing and charging an electric vehicle?

Once we live in a perfect world, and they can produce and power a vehicle without producing emissions, I'll start using the term.

And, no one is trying to claim that ICE vehicles produce less emissions than electric vehicles. My main issue with electric vehicles is that they suck for the way I live.

Now they're emitting emissions when charging now? "emissions" are released when the vehicles are being used, which electric vehicles emit zero. You do you, man. I'm done

Emissions are released when producing the power that charges the vehicle (in most cases). The fact that they're not produced directly at the vehicle doesn't mean that they don't exist.

Yes, there's probably less emissions. And yes, that's better. But, it's still a bullshit term.

    It's been fun!

No you aren’t. You can’t help yourself. Where do you think electricity comes from? Electricity doesn’t make electricity. There are emissions while creating the electricity and I’m not sure if you read earlier, tire wear on EV’s is polluting at a higher rate because of the battery weight
