Is there a major manufacturer who hasn't been caught cheating yet? Makes you wonder if:
    1. The regulations are unrealistic
    2. The penalties for cheating are cheaper than meeting the regulations

Considering as of 2025 MY Toyota will have stopped using all of its time tested NA gas only drivetrains in the US, and turning to either hybrids and/or turbos, my gut feeling is 2 is not true, else people would pay a premium to buy Toyotas as they always have done.

If Toyota has a viable way to pay a fine an keep selling 5th 4Runners or the 5.7L and 4.6L v8 Lexus models, they would have continued.

    Oooh look, another mod.....
Most manufacturers (and people) believe it's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission. That article also mentioned Honda, Mazda & Nissan getting caught doing something wrong, so it makes me think the regulations are unrealistic or just outright dumb.

Like I said in the other thread, just look at how few non-HD diesels are left in the US. Either every automaker is an idiot that suddenly can't do it right anymore, or the rules are being tightened to the point where it is set up to fail everyone.

Unfortunately a lot of big corporations actually have accountants whose job is to calculate whats least expensive - do the right thing, or do the wrong thing and pay the fines.

Toyota disappoints me here but they are far from alone. VW Deiselgate, decades of tobacco industry cover ups, oil industry lobbying, leaded gas, and on and on....

Too many mods and too much money
Most big corps cheat in one way or another, especially on carbon credits.
Toyota probably a lot less than others, but they got caught this time. On a sidebar: All lobbying needs to go away, along with the Privately owned Federal Reserve Bank. The corruption and inflation runs rampant. It's like having a Gotti loan shark in charge of our treasury. How we ever allowed them to charge us interest on our own money....smh.
