it's not visibly squating at the rear with all the weight out back so it's doing better than many.

Yeah, I'll have "Things That Look RIDICULOUS for $500, Alex!"

I mean, yeah, I pity the poor soul that purchases this at cost to find out about the manual passenger seat as well. -_-

    Cheers,

I wonder if you could ask the dealer to return it to stock and then offer $40K for it. :)

Wow, that's nuts. And not in a good way.

$20K over stock, with no sunroof and with a Radio Shack-looking switch stuck into the dash.

    Ridiculous.

Stupidness like this is why we don't still have dinosaurs! :D

lol don’t compare a badly modded 4R to mah grenadier!

No grenadier owner would ever be swayed by a kitted out 4R. Autozone parts on a 4R is sht on rice

Point taken. Grenadier owners are quite astute and don't easily fall prey to marketing shenanigans.

When I pick up my kids from their day care there is a guy with a modded one with every conceivable overlanding accessory known to man, my wife says she sees that SR5 at the local light rail station every day sitting in the open for 10 hours a day.

I am still to this day very confused why he didn't just put another 4-5k and get an OR or ORP.

The SR5 is actually an ideal platform for a major build. If one's plans include a regear, it's easy enough to add a locker at that point. Aside from that, the biggest upgrade the OR gets is a manual T-case. MTS and CC are neat features, but A-TRAC and the locker are the only things that have really been beneficial to me.

That said; I'd rather do my own mods than over-pay for dealer added accessories.

That 4-5k premium would have bought you KDSS as well. Good luck adding that.

I wouldn't want KDSS for a major build. Nobody would. Sway bars would most likely be going away. And, it's an additional ~$1800 on top of the standard OR price.

Then it makes even less sense to get the SR5 since the OR was like what, 2k more than a 4WD SR5 of the same year? You save 2-3k but have to add back in the locker and other OR/ORP stuff if you want them. By the time you finish installing an aftermarket ARB or other air locker you are already same amount of dollars into it without getting ATRAC, manual transfer case shifter, and I think maybe power passenger seat and softex too? Not too sure if OR can standard with dual power seats and softex.

IMHO the SR5 was a great value if you don't need lockers and other features that the OR/ORP/Pro add. But once you start adding features to backfill OE features that value proposition is eroded quickly.

It's not that much extra to add a locker if you're regearing anyway. Plus, the aftermarket lockers are better than the OEM locker.

    The SR5 has A-TRAC. ;)

This is nice. But, we still rely on an actuator in the front differential.

SR5 premium and Off-road premium have the same seats.

I think the Off-road is a good value if you really want those features. But, if I were doing a serious build, I'd rather add my own lockers and accessories. I don't use Crawl or MTS. So, why not save a few grand?

How many people with SR5s have actually regeared on this site?

you brought it up, seemed like you cared, but okay.

BTW SR5P was only 800 dollars less than an OR. I thought we were talking about the base SR5 but since you mentioned SR5P, let's keep that in perspective.

That's irrelevant. I'm not talking about what's popular. I'm talking about what's possible.

My point was that it's a better build platform in some cases because you're not spending extra money on features you don't need, or features that can be added.

If somebody is not planning on opening up their differentials and just wants a locker, and/or other features that the off-road comes with, then that is probably a better choice for them. I started with an ORP because I wanted KDSS at the time.

But, some of the coolest builds I have seen here have been SR5's.

BTW, the ORP was ~$3400 more than the SR5P in 2024, so let's keep that in perspective.

I mentioned the SR5P because you brought up the seats. If we're comparing prices, let's compare them with similar options.

To me me, the biggest issue is the fact that it’s a brand new car that’s been gussied up by who-knows-who. The chance that there won’t be issues related to those mods is nearly zero. The buyer is going to be the one doing the shake-out runs whether they planned to or not. It’s just a expensive recipe for disappointment.

From a dealer perspective it has to be a pain as well, since chances are the buyer would be somebody who didn’t know they wanted this, “but it looks so cool”. That buyer is more likely to come back complaining about noises from things shaking around on the rear bumper, shitty handling, wind noise, etc.
