    Different strokes..

If we're being logical here, why would anyone buy a 4Runner for street use? A Highlander is a much better choice for pavement and occasional gravel roads.

If off-road use isn't a priority, there are very few worse choices than a 4Runner.

The thing that irks me, and probably a lot of people even if only subconsciously, is the realization that in a way you don’t actually own and control your car.

The manufacturer can turn things on or off whenever it wants. And so could a hacker. This is the really big issue. Why are people ok with their cars being controllable over the internet?

One of the great joys of owning a vehicle is the power and freedom that provides. It’s a shame so many people are so ready to compromise that by letting their vehicles be controlled by businesses, governments and bad actors from thousands of miles away.

This is probably why some people love old vehicles. :D

I would be concerned (maybe irrationally) that a computer glitch or virus at headquarters could immobilize my vehicle, or cause other issues.

I don't take issue with it. I'm just saying, if we're basing decisions on logic, there's no reason for most people to own a 4Runner.

People buy them because they look good, and then come here and start a thread about bad gas mileage.

Totally disagree with the first point. It’s logical to want a vehicle that’s more likely than almost any other vehicle to run past 200k miles.

It’s logical to want a vehicle that is more mechanically simple and analog in feel than almost anything else in its category.

It’s logical to want a vehicle that combines all that with the ability to haul 7 people (I have third row) or a lot of cargo, and without being ginormous on the outside.

It’s logical to want a vehicle that does all that while having a superior 4WD system for bad weather like snow.

It’s logical to want a vehicle that does all that and can be good off road in the few times you might need that. And can tow a decent amount in the few times you might need that.

Every vehicle is a compromise. If you value the above more than things like mpg, handling, speed and “features,” then the 4Runner might be the best new vehicle now being sold.

What makes no sense to me is buying a 4Runner when your priorities, such as mpg, would make you happier in a crossover. But I ain’t one of those people.

I’ve often defended the mpg on this forum. It’s not a priority for me.

    - Plenty of high mileage Highlanders out there.

    - What's more complicated about an AWD Highlander? Analog feeling is about feelings, not logic.

    - I wonder if there are any 7 passenger Highlanders?

    - Off road capability being a priority is the exact reason I said one should buy a 4Runner. A Highlander has the same towing capacity.

    - I care about fuel economy. But, I accept reality.

However, getting 19 MPG in a full size, extended cab, 4WD, V8 truck with way more power, without even trying, does make me anxious for the 6th gen. Hopefully they nail it.

I'm good with the Prius part, if you mean a hybrid option.

I don't want a unibody. Anyone who does, should buy a Highlander.;)

I'd be happy with a more powerful and efficient drivetrain, though. I just hope they can make it reliable.

Looking back, this sounds pretty harsh. I just meant from a practicality standpoint.

I had 2 4Runners before this one. And, even though they weren't the most efficient vehicles, they were workhorses.
