I just picked up a 94 4runner with 154,000 miles. The first thing I had to do is get a muffler and tail pipe. Came out great. What should be some of the first things I should check? The previous owner told me he had a slight oil leak in the rear seal. Is this a project I should try?

(Assuming you have 3VZE) For starters, you should make sure the brakes are up to snuff and flush the cooling system. Another thing that’s often overlooked is the diff fluid. Mine leaked oil at the back of the motor when I bought it (with 75k on the dial) and it turned out to just be valve cover gaskets, so check those first. If it’s the rear main, I believe you’ll need to pull the transfer case and transmission, which is a big job, but not undoable with the proper tools (Absolutely rent or buy a tranny jack).

    Have fun!
