The Pro and Trailhunter are halo models. People already spend $10k over msrp for a 5th gen pro (stupidly, but they do it). So, Toyota figured they'd take some of that cash back from the dealers.

I think the bigger problem, as has already been shown in this thread, is the price of the options on top of the TRD Off-Road. The $10k premium package is jeep-level greedy.

Well, we'll have to reconvene in 3 years to see how they're all selling, and what the out the door prices are.

    Oooh look, another mod.....

My daddy told me a looooooooong time ago to follow the 20/4/10 rule.

20% down payment, 4-year loan term, and 10% of salary for transportation costs.

I paid off my 2021 Tacoma in 18 months, and at the rate I'm going, I'll have my 2023 4Runner paid off in 18-20 months. Even doing that, won't dramatically impact my savings or my emergency savings.

10% of salary pre-tax, or after tax? Based on your math, the TRD Pro would cost anywhere from $1300/mo to $1400/mo depending on good/bad your credit is. You'll need a minimum $250k/year gross.

    • 10% of your gross income — your total monthly auto costs (including insurance, gas, maintenance, and car payments) should be 10% or less of your monthly income.

My monthly payment is $531 per month, for 48months. I put down more than 20% and did not roll the TT&L into the loan. Doing that knocked down the monthly payment by $80. I make about $90k a year.

So yeah, I think I followed the 20/4/10 rule pretty well. Oh, and my current credit score on Experian & Trans Union are 821 & 816.

But if you don't put down any money or very little money, then yeah...your monthly can be over $1k per month. The interest rate will bury you though.

Wasn't commenting on your current payment, was commenting on the new Tacoma pricing and current interest rates.

    Sorry if I was unclear.

Also, I don't base my expenses off my gross. Since I have to pay taxes, that makes zero sense to me. My actual take home is what matters for me. But, that's just me.

We’re better off saving that money for retirement let them get the bugs worked out and buy in the last few years of that generation. One and done.

Take those payments add interest at 4.5 percent now with our inflation and save that as cash for retirement. Get yourself some cash savings for early years of retirement, in the lowest tax bracket, get cheaper medical costs at that income, then start converting your 401k to Roth IRAs while living on the cash savings. You’re in a lowest income tax bracket and now you pay lowest tax rate on your 401k distribution and it grows tax free now as a Roth. Suddenly you say dang I did not really need that extra truck.

Good advice. From someone that is retiring in a few months when I hit 50, new "whatever" doesn't matter so much as just having financial balance/or freedom.

Steel bumpers, two lockers, 4.10, Leather seats, 33 inch AT tires, a good 3.6L V6, the phenomenal 8 spd ZF transmission, a second to none transfer case, all that on top of a truck that can pull 7000 lbs. You sure it is worth only $50,000 while junk from Ford and Toyota are going for over $50,000?

They drive like any truck that has two solid axles, and better. They give $17k discount because fanboys are crazy for their Tacos, a much inferior truck

It is all about what sells. If your product sells a ton, you treat the customer like dirt, and Tacoma sells, more than some manufactuters' entire lineups. And Jeep treats you like dirt if you want a Wrangler from them, no big discounts on those, they will sell you a fully loaded 2 door for $80k.

They will have a rude awakening, they will not be able to sell them. This new 4Runner is becoming the 200 series, sales will drop

In a beautiful refrigerator white. That’s why they discounted so deep. For that kind of money they should offer a color.

Amen. I work in tech and I see a not insignificant number of 6 figure cars in the garage. We make good money..... but not that good....

OTOH, I think one thing folks discount when complaining about these high prices of new Toyotas is factoring in resale value if you trade up every 5,7,10 years. I spent 31k on my Taco, but turned around and sold it for 20something at 10 years old. Effectively it cost me less than 10k in depreciation and no maintenance cost except for oil changes and tires.. Yes you may now get a Mercedes or Land Rover for the same price as a loaded Land Cruiser... but after 10 years its resale will be pennies on the dollar and the maintenance cost will be steep.

IMO Toyota is both pushing and pricing themselves out of their own niche market. They were never the best at anything, just generally good in all categories but great for reliability. With these new engines and hybrid technology I am not sure if they will be as bulletproof and reliable. They had the reliability market cornered and may now be giving that up. They also had what I would consider fair price points so people were willing to sacrifice power, luxury etc to buy a good, extremely reliable car at a reasonable price.

I really loved toyota and bought the 4runner for its all around good capability and its well known reliability. In the case of the new Tacoma, at these prices I would be looking at much more capable options such as the Ranger Raptor or ZR2 Bison. With toyota introducing all this new hybrid and turbo tech, I think it evens out the reliability playing field.

I got rid of my 2007 camry last year after 16 years as it was reliable but boring and horribly outdated from its release. Looking at Toyota and Lexus' current higher end lineup nothing appealed to me or looked like it was keeping up with the times either so i looked at other options and ended up buying an RS5. The power, comfort, features and tech is lightyears ahead of anything Toyota currently offers. I will still be keeping my 4runner till it dies, as I think it is one of the most reliable SUV offroaders right now, but when it is time to change that out I will most likely look outside toyota to replace that too.

It is close to time to replace the wife's car too and am looking at non-toyota as well for that.

I kind of regret not snapping one up when Jeep was blowing them out.

As far as the other trucks, ZR2 is a relative bargain, and the Ranger Raptor (RRaptor?) is also a better deal than the Taco.

I wonder how much of that price is those ridiculous seats literally NO ONE asked for.

For $65k, it should be rolling on 35's factory. And yeah, it's a hybrid and none of the competition is...but you can buy a LOT of gas for the $10k+ savings...

I think the sweet spot is still the TRD OffRoad. Let those who need the clout continue to overpay for the Pro (and now Trailhunter), take the savings and build it better than a Pro/Trailhunter.

Never needed extended warranty. Whenever something breaks you just buy the parts and get it fixed. Not at the dealership of course.

The sweet spot for value is likely to be TRD Off-road as it always has been. I don’t think all people buying TRD Pros (as someone who has owned two via Taco and 4Runner and never paid above MSRP) are always clout chasers. Some people’s calculus is more like:

“Do I want a turnkey fully factory warrantied 4Runner that can take me through rough trails and roads with ease and is to Toyota engineering spec? Is the price and convenience worth it to me?” Also, for better or worse, real TRD Pros by VIN (vs wheels swap and badge swap) have extraordinarily high resale values.

There are many ultra built aftermarket 4Runners out there and when I see them on trails engaging in extreme rock crawling, I cheer them on in my head as they attempt to go head to head with Wranglers. But I personally don’t need a stadium truck or trailer queen and that’s far outside of anything I’d do with my daily driver. To me, the TRD Pro spec is about has aggressive as I’d trade off between daily livability vs off-road capability given my skew and amount of time spent driving pavement. If I can’t get through it with a TRD Pro with rock sliders on it, I am not gonna do it with my daily driver. Also, I have seen many many many bad lift jobs that destroy any semblance of Toyota reliability and result in premature and uneven tire wear, suspension wear and tear and failures, etc. It is true that you can get an aftermarket lift and suspension setup really well dialed-in, but that takes a lot more than what many people end up getting when aftermarket Joe does a ratchet job lifting what was a perfectly reliable truck leaving the Toyota factory. Yes, I am aware of port installed options and items, but I just mean the spec, geometry, parts, etc being vetted and okayed by Toyota.
