Steering wheel shake and pull. KO2s to blame?

    My wife miss GMC Yukon XL adjustable pedals feature. She loved to adjust the seats to max height and get the pedals all the way up. With the 4Runner since you can't adjust the pedals her seat is pretty close to the steering. Miss the land yacht feeling on long highways drives.

    Mine didn’t have the adjustable Pedals I think that was 2003+ but yes I get in it every now and then and it feels like a couch in a living room vs the 4 runner…and of course I go to shift in the cup holder (it has column shift) lol

    Glad I could be some assistance with this. It was all new to me as well. I came from a 2016 Tacoma and never had the issues. I did a little research and kept pushing DT to get the numbers lower and I’m glad I did.

    Just got C rated K02s today from Discount Tire. I specifically asked for road force balancing and voiced my concerns about balancing, I was told they’re aware and keep multiple K02’s on hand because of it. Go figure, not only do I have a pretty violent wheel shimmy from 50-65 (at least), but they couldn’t get my TPMS indicator to go out, claiming their OBDII device wouldn’t connect, they recommended I drive to the other DT in town to see if they could get it reset. I should’ve known better, I have no one to blame but myself, but I am a bit pissed considering the price of these fucking things (1250 out the door, that’s with a “Labor Day” 110 discount and 50 something off for being a veteran). They get one chance to make this right, otherwise I’ll be asking to switch I guess to Toyo’s. This DT has typically done good work for me in the past, good people, I think it’s the tires.

    I just had the same tires in a 265/70r17 installed and they are smoother than my stock dunlops. Still shimmy’s here and there but I think SO FAR I like them a whole lot more vs the dunlops. Mine were $1400 with the road force balancing with a discount of $320 for the stocks. So about $1100. Waste of money though as I was hoping my shimmy was bad tires and the 22 is being traded in soon. To many issues.

    Under 50mph, before the shimmy starts, I definitely like them more than dunlops, even being c-rated. Sorry to hear your rig is still having issues, but what worse is going on with it? What're you trading in for? I’ve considered ordering a 23, even though I know I’d lose some money having just gotten the 18, but if there’s still this bullshit shimmy issue in the newer vehicles, maybe not.

    I think it’s in vehicles ranging from when this generation started until now at random numbers apparently, my parents have a 2019 that is completely fine. This includes tacomas to it seems like I have been seeing as well? But I am having paint issues. More chips everyday on hood, fenders, doors which I don’t understand how and the severity of them. Something eating my clear coat on my hood Along with scratches…tons and tons of scratches which i go through touch less car wash’s & use microfiber products if I wash myself. Main issue though for selling is the shimmy. I can’t deal with it pretty much to and from work most days. Just ordered a 2022 ram classic tradesman HEMI ‘fully loaded’ pretty much, and my 4 runner was valued at $40,000 for trade in which for how the body’s looking with the paint I can’t complain, paid $44,500 & the shimmy that they do not know exists. Someone else can deal with it! And I had the needle bearing issue which didn’t come back yet with the new front differential. Turns out this isn’t the best highway vehicle as well room wise and how it handles between road crown and a little bit of wind. takes come effort to stay in the lanes some days

    I don't see any reason to expect the issue to be fixed on the '23's, as they will be exactly the same as the '22's.

    I'm curious if they'll finally redesign the front differential for the '24's. o_O

    I wonder if they are actually gonna change the 4 runner in 2024 still, but i agree here…they won’t make a change for the last year lol.

    I would rather have the dealership install tires/wheels/shocks. Its expected to have issues once you change the drive train dynamics.
    In fact, my local dealership have a promotion of 4 tires for price of 3. You cant beat that. I compared the final prices with tire rack.

    Am not planning to change my tires now. Since i don't have an Shimmies currently.

    Let them deal with it. My2C.

    The last time it came up it sounded like it would be a 24 model year, but not released until 2024. But, who knows how many times they're going to change their minds between now and then.:notsure:

    The 2022 have a superseded design. The part numbers are different. But some dealerships may still be installing the older version (am guessing) because of non-availability from Japan.

    On the 2022, would suggest driving for a few thousand miles before dropping off for replacements. Except both sides are groaning.
    In my case, its was only the passenger side front wheel wells with the issue. A 10MM wrench fixed my issues.
    They rebalanced all tires. Had only one weight on each wheel from the port. Have about eight on each wheel now.
    Next service, I will have them rebalance the spare as well.
    Maybe my case was unique.

    What I meant was a complete redesign of the differential.

    Mine was replaced in 2020. The replacement differential had a different part number than the original one. Yet, people are having the issue with '21's and '22's.

    I haven't had a problem with the replacement. But, if they had solved the problem back then, why are new ones still having the issue?

    I’ll give DT one more chance, then maybe go to the dealership to see if they can sort it out. Just sucks dumping money into tires to just have this crap happen. There was a slight shimmy on the dunlops, and the alignment is definitely also off, but the shimmy on these k02s is out of control. I hope it’s not a differential issue, but at least it’s CPO.

    I can see 2020-onward having the excuse of the pandemic, but not for a 2018. Maybe I’ll call that number and see what they say, as long as they don’t ask for my credit card up front.

    Thank you for this info. I put on new wheels/tires a week ago and have been very frustrated with severe shimmy at 55-65 mph.

    Had a coworker/friend with access to a balancer try on Thursday and made it worse. Friday went to Discount Tire and had them road force balanced and still had shimmy problems. Went back this morning and was referred to another DT with finger plates for balancing.

    Now it is super smooth at all speeds. I don't think they even removed the tires from the wheels. Just redid the balance and added 1/2 oz. to one wheel and 3/4 oz. to another. The other two were fine.

    Third attempt, road force results in the 20’s all around, which I’m told is good. Recommending I reach out to Toyota dealership at this point or switch tires. Very brief 50-65mph stretch on the way home seemed promising though. Fingers crossed.

    I'm in the same boat here but I started out stock on my '21 TRD ORP with no shimmy. Went to a Toytec lift, KMC Mesa wheels with a 0mm offset and 285/70/17 KO2s in C load. No shimmy. Ran about 10k miles like that without issue. Just added RCI aluminum armor (The main skid package) and some spidertrax 1.25" spacers and now I have a shimmy starting at 45mph until about 60mph. I just had an alignment done which didn't make a difference but I wanted to rule it out since I added weight and changed geometry, and have been wheeling a fair amount. They did make some adjustments but the issue persists.

    I got my KO2s from DT so I'll be calling to find one nearby that has the finger plate mounts, will match the tires and wheels and can road force test them to 20 or under based on the great comments in this thread. I work weekends so I'm hoping to get this done sometime next week. I'll report back once I get there.

    Third time was not a charm. Shimmy is back. They still can’t get TPMS light out either. At this point, I’m not sure what to do aside from try a non-chain, smaller balance/alignment shop, try different tires, or drive the car off a cliff. Discount Tire recommends having Toyota check the suspension or they’ll swap out the tires. Really wanted these k02’s to work due to being C rated. Bummed.

    Chances are another tire is just gonna do the same thing, drive it off a cliff and try another if you wish.

    OK so I just got home from the test drive. I still have the shimmy. What's weird is that the shimmy is only there on rough roads. Smooth and newer surfaces don't seem create the same issue.

    For the record, I did not do the finger plate this time. The shop had some brand new road force machines and wanted to try that. All RF numbers were under 15. They agreed to let me bring it back to try with the finger plates if this didn't work so I will be setting that up but I work weekends and won't be able to get back until next week.

    My shimmy didn't start until I put armor and spacers on so if the finger plate balance doesn't do it, removing the spacers is the next step. Maybe it's just too wide now for the natural grooves in the road?

    It's probably worth checking to see if it's the spacers. I don't really hear about issues with them, but you never know. Even if something is just a little off, I could see them causing trouble.

    Just a side note though. Probably keep away from aggressive tires full time use except you are off-roading.
    Not an expert in these field.

    I remember having to remove aggressive Wranglers from my Mountaineer ages ago - at the request of the service department.
    It was messing up my drivetrain.

    Though I really love the bold look of aggressive tires.

    It's this Forum's fault! I've got a 2019 TRD/OR with KO2s and didn't have a damn thing wrong with it until I read through all these posts then WHAMMO! I got a nibble in my steering wheel at 60mph - took it to Discount Tires (where the tires where purchased) and they corrected the issue within 30 minutes. Gotta stop looking at this forum - it'll put a wiggle in your waggle! :dancingbacon:

    This is weird.

    I've tried 3 different sets of spacers on my front end (1", 1.25" and 1.5") and none of them has caused or added a shimmy.

    If a squat truck can drive without shimmy, a 4 runner with at tires should be able to as well…it’s the vehicle
