Is the cable even accessible for cutting from under the vehicle with the spare up?

There’s so many more wheel thefts just off the vehicle itself, wheel locks aren’t hard to defeat but of course reason isn’t necessary guaranteed.

Where does one put things other than tires in order to deter theft? Hidden, welp…it’s a fat-ass-tire

People will steal anything, some just to see if they can steal it! I once had a pair of socks stolen in the Marine Corps (boot camp). Locks were mentioned early in your post, what a pain in the a$$ to mess with. Remember some of the older cars that had a recessed part of the trunk for the spare tire? That's about all I come up with, that would be a major rebuild. Where you are located is well.... hey someone's gotta live there. Sorry not a real solution for you right now, locks seem to be in the lead at present.

OP I seriously doubt this will happen again. That chain would not be easy to cut; Pretty high risk crime if you ask me. Be thankful he didn't cut out your cats.

Depending on your policy you may be covered for theft... Did you make a police report? That will likely be a prerequisite before filing an insurance claim.

Edit: If criminals cut the chain to get your spare tire, no pad lock will protect it. The only thing that may help is:
-Parking in a garage (Hard deterrent)
-Parking under motion activated light with security camera (Soft deterrent)

Past that, I'd be thankful that it wasn't worse. Security on these rigs is not the best. Educated criminals can break one window, plug into your OBDII port and start your rig and drive off in a matter of minutes. No alarm will sound. He could have done that, or just stole your cats, or stole valuables from inside.

Don't be mad at the forum. Be made at the lack of enforcement in your area that allows these type of crimes to occur and vote for change... Or move. Just my honest two cents.

I looked at my truck, I have no idea how someone could steal my spare. I would think it would be alot easier to take one off of the truck.

If it doesn't bother you to do this, take the next spare and make sure the tire is clean, then spray paint the whole thing pink or green or something. Or just the non-visible half of it, so that from behind it looks ok.

Where do you all live? The town I live in , with the exception of an occasional murder, has very little crime.

It's hit or miss where I'm at. When we first moved in I forgot to close the garage door with free access to the house and no issues. A few months later the police caught someone breaking into houses in the neighborhood and shot them after they tried to run them over while fleeing.

Apparently, being close-ish to the interstate means lots of quick stolen goods in the area as people get off the interstate to try to find something to steal to trade for drugs in the city (another 45 min down the interstate) - according to the police we talked to afterward. They called it the heroin highway and said it was poor druggies coming from rural red state areas to the blue state big city for drugs. The quick on/off access to the interstate means the gas stations get robbed on a regular basis. We had no idea because the area is generally considered safe and crime maps shows low rates.

I think everyone moving towards a work from home position really helped the past few years because there are always people in the neighborhood now during the day and haven't heard of any issues. Now with return to work, wonder if that trend will change.

I don't think it's so much a red or blue state thing as much as a people problem in general. Too many people overall and too many without personal responsibilities.

I told you what I'd do to stop it from being stolen, there is only so much you can do. If they're stealing spares chances are they'll steal something one way or another, if the spare is unavailable they can move 6 feet over and remove the cat. Shit happens
