Bought a 4th gen 06 4runner SR5 4x4 for my teenager (175K mi.). Thought I would join the forum because I can see a lot of useful information here. We still have a year to "build" it like he wants it. We started with a compromise and will continue to do that through the build. Ideally he wanted a giant crew cab diesel with a 6" lift and 35s. Ok, so he didn't get it, but I also didn't get him a Yugo either. Now he'd probably like a 6" lift with 35s on the 4runner, but I'm thinking 3" and 32-33s. Entertaining suggestions for the build. I put a 3" suspension lift on my GMC sierra so I'm capable, but researching fitment, ride quality and price is daunting. I'd love to stay under 2k for the build if possible, but if a couple hundred makes a much better package that's OK. SO far I'm thinking 285-65-18's or something close to that on 18x9 w/-12 black machined wheels. I like toyo atII's and fuel maverics or Havok H103's, but he'll probably get his choice of rim within reason. I also like the TRD rims as well. Thinking Rough Country 3" suspension lift. Oh yeah, he wants an aftermarket roof rack as well. I shopped custom offsets, but any suggestions on saving $$ helps.

Just my $.02, but avoid rough country products. Go with proven reliability. Check out Dobinsons website or hit up Marie at Headstrong OffRoad as she can put together a package for you that will be budget friendly.

I have a rough country 3" lift on my third gen and ran a 4" rough country lift on my pickup. Never had issues with either and I beat the hell out of my pickup. Ride wise the 4 runner to me handles well ( granted my daily driver is an excursion on 37"s so most everything handles better than it does.) The rear springs took awhile to settle but I've been happy with it, especially because it didn't cost me and arm and a leg.
