The factory crossbars are rated for 130 pounds and should be fine for carrying one canoe. I suggest that you get Yakima "gunwale brackets" made for their aerodynamic bars (shown in crummy pic below) That's what I use to clamp onto my wife's factory bars on her CR-V. They should clamp right onto your factory crossbars. They will keep the canoe from moving side to side and also prevent it from moving front to rear since the middle (fattest) part of the canoe is trapped. Then I'd recommend good straps...I like Thule or NRS. For highway use or windy days you can double strap the canoe...using one set of straps tightened from the driver's side (pulling the canoe towards driver side) and a second set pulling it towards the passenger side. Then you want some sort of front anchor points. I use scraps of Kevlar pulling tape (pic) but you can use strong/thin rope or the Thule (or other brand) anchor loops (link). All of these are tucked in under the hood when not being used. You can tie the front carry handle to the anchor loops using rope (most people use a Trucker's Hitch so you'd have to learn one knot) or straps (which can be fussy and buzz) or use something made for the task but expensive like Thule's "Quick Draw". With good bow lines you may not need to double strap. For shorter distances at lower speeds on days that aren't windy you may not need bow lines but they are always a good idea. If you don't use bow lines or just want a little extra security you can also use one strap to pull the rear of the boat down to your trailer hitch. Pic shows my belt and suspenders set-up with load stops, double straps, bow lines and stern strap. I usually don't use everything. Let me know if you have any questions. Nice truck! :)

Just got my 2014 Trail a few weeks ago and have made some basic mods so far. First thing was to remove the pinstripe and running boards. Also added lift and tires and Cali Raised rock sliders are on order.

My wife and I did some camping in New Mexico a few weeks ago. I’m still on stock suspension but I bashed my fuel skid plate pretty good on a rocky section so I’m thinking a lift is in my future.

Looking forward to installing suspension and new wheels.
