I have both a 3rd gen taco and 2020 4R OR. I prefer the 4R. No crazy shift patterns to screw with my emotions.

True SR5 have 3rd row option and more payload than TRDs. Same story with Limiteds. Lot of good reasons to buy on each trim.

True, TRD Pro wheels approved for 275 and under. But Stock TRD Offroad wheels approved upto 34in 285/75R17.

I own a 2019 4Runner Off Road Premium and a 2022 Tacoma TRD Off Road.

I am 5'11" and the 4Runner fits me better and I much prefer the driving position. As others have said, cabin space is tremendously larger. In the Tacoma the dogs can lie in the back seat and stretch their legs out on the center console. While I do prefer the engine/transmission combination in the 4Runner, I can not say I have any complaints with the six speed on the Tacoma hunting for gears. In fact my specific Tacoma seems to drive and track better then my 4Runner.

The 4Runner always gets camping duty as the Tacoma is just too small. You are getting a new 4Runner so you will benefit from new headlights as well. I have upgraded bulbs in the 4Runner, but the LED headlights and fog lights that came stock on the Tacoma are awesome. My only real gripe I have with the 4Runner is the so-so heated seats. The heated leather seats from the factory in the Tacoma are fantastic and maintain a constant heat no matter the setting, I feel the 4Runner is constantly cycling.

How much do you use a pick up bed? We use ours all the time so that is consideration as well.

My 4Runner was also the last year of having a key to start the truck, old infotainment and gauge cluster, so comparing it to a Tacoma with new tech and better instrumentation is not fair as my 4Runner is years behind. Still wouldn't sell it though.

LED for LED the Tacoma LED’s are far super to the 4Runner. That is something I REALLY miss about the Tacoma. Toyota should have gone with the same style housing on the 4 runner rather than fit the LED bulb in a housing similar to the halogen.

I don’t notice much bad about the LED headlights for the 4Runner compared to other vehicles I have owned recently.

My 21 Tundra Pro, 22 Supra 3.0 and 23 4Runner. All lights have seemed to produce the same performance imo

My old lady also has a 23 Highlander and all seem to produce the same output to me.

without going crazy off track, I only noticed it when I go home. I live in the country and it is DARK! The 4Runners just doesn’t give me the same light distance with them both adjusted. From the factory, the 4 runner was perfect, but I kept getting flashed. When I measured the beam, it was high, so I had to drop it a little. It’s not bad, just not as good as the Tacoma. I find myself using high beams constantly

That's exactly what I have. A silver 2022 TRD ORP. You're going to love it. I traded in my 2017 TRD Taco for it and haven't had a single regret other than the manual transmission. I do love a manual, and I wish the 4Runner still came with it as an option.

1st post here. Funny to see this thread as I'm (maybe you could say was) in the same delema. I have a 2020 taco dcab offroad with 6pd manual that I'm trading in. Made a deal and put a deposit down on a 4runner ORP in lunar rock. This vehicle will be shared with the ol lady and she wanted softex and lunar rock. I wanted the manual transfer case and locking diff, so ORP it was.

I've owned my taco for a bit over 2 years now and only have 1700 miles. Dealer questioned the low milage as that is not common at all. So I average about 50 miles a month! I have an 06 tundra that I bought new and work provides me with a work truck so the taco doesn't get used much. Wife drives a 21 camry. I have a 17 year old and a 14 year old so using the taco is not really an option for any long trips. Going to let the wife daily the 4runner and let the 17 year old take over payments on the camry to use for college in about 6 months.

I did opt for the kdss though as I found the 4runner very floaty compared to the taco and tundra. Felt like I was going to roll over getting off the expressway. Lol. I got a pretty good deal for today market anyways. Msrp was just shy of $48.9k. Otd was 40.5k. I have a feeling the used car market is going to crash soon as dealers seem to be picking up inventory. So I wanted to make a move before that happens and my trade value goes down.

Well I think the biggest factor is money. I would say wait a little longer for the market to get better and then if they buy your Tacoma for a good price and you find a good deal on a 4Runner go for it. Currently as It seems Unfortunately what I’m seeing is that a lot of dealerships are buying used cars for pre inflation prices but still selling them high. For instance If a dealer buys your Tacoma from you for let’s say 35k they might sell it for Closer to 45k they are buying used cars cheaply since they know their going to have to drop the price in the future based on the current trend

The used car market already crashed, look at kbb trade in on a 2019, 2020.

But I don't blame you guys trading in your tacoma on your 4runner. I did the same thing, I loved my tacoma but with a growing family and large pets the 4runner is perfect.

The single biggest reason we sold our Tacoma and bought a 4Runner. Meet Herbie, our rescue pit bull. Absolutely the sweetest doggie in the whole world!

I think you have a different definition of "OTD price". I think most people think of OTD price as the actual gross price paid for the vehicle:

    MSRP
    + options and accesorries
    +destination charge
(+) market adjustment or (-) discount
    + sales tax
    + doc, title, license fees
    =========
    Gross OTD price

The net out of pocket or financed price will be different for everyone based on whether you traded, put cash down, etc and doesn't really mean anything for anyone but you. To take it a step further I think OTD price minus TTL is more valuable on a forum as those vary state to state as well.

Yup. That's why I questioned the 'OTD' post - it sounded like the dealer knocked $8.4k off the MSRP.

About this time last year I took advantage of the crazy high trade in value of my 2018 Tacoma Sport and ordered a 2022 4Runner SR5. All in, it cost me about $3500 out of pocket. I drove a 1996 4Runner and loved it. But, when it was time to upgrade I went to the Tacoma's (2010 followed by 2018) for the manual transmission. Now, I'm ok with the automatic, I wanted back into an SUV, I wasn't using the bed of the Tacoma often, and I own a nice Aluma Trailer. All said and done, I love the 4Runner. In the past year there have been maybe 3 times I missed having the bed of the Tacoma. In my case the trade was worth it both financially, and for my driving convenience.

Why don't you like the Tacoma?
Sometimes I wish I had a few of the features like the 6speed transmission and a little better tow capacity.

My vehicle history is remarkably similar to yours. I started with a 2002 4Runner, then sold if for a 2009 Tacoma, followed by a 2017 Tacoma, which I just traded for a 2022 4Runner. The first two vehicles had over 250k miles when I sold them. I went from a family of 4 and 2 dogs with the 2017 Taco to just me and one dog. I decided the cargo capacity of the bed was no longer needed for two dog crates, and that me and my one pooch would sleep much more comfortably inside a 4Runner. I do miss the manual transmission though.

Yes, do it... I had a 2020Tacoma TRD Pro and I hated it. Uncomfortable, crappy gas mileage and a useless back seat...

I really like the idea of a Tacoma. I have wanted one for 20 years. First time I ended up with an 03 4Runner. Second time I bought an 06 Tundra. 3rd time I took home a 19 4Runner.

Every time I wen in hoping Toyota had addressed driver seating position. I’m only a hair over six feet. It seemed like I was staring at the roofline with no headroom and sitting on the floor with my legs straight out. Deal killer.

I also went from a 21 Tacoma to a 18 TRD ORP. I like the 4runner way better. It doesn’t hunt the gears. Even after a tune the Tacoma felt weak and loved downshifting on the highway. The 4runner is way more comfortable for my family. sleeping in it for hunting in the winter last month was great. Off road it’s more capable than my Tacoma sport was too. So far I’m in love. Even tows better I find. Mileage is about the same as I was getting on the Tacoma. So far really happy, planning to add Apple CarPlay at some point, that’s about the only thing I miss from the taco. I sold that taco privately for a 4K profit and bought a cheaper used 4runner so it worked out well financially too.

The only thing the Tacoma has going for it is resale... Mine got rear ended (was repaired) and when I sold it I got exactly what I paid for it.

Gas mileage is no better than a full size truck, seating position is terrible, rear seat is useless , and tiny bed.

I had a Tacoma before I made the switch to the 4Runner. I had a 2012 and it was a great truck! Helped me move a couple different times and helped friends move stuff. That was probably less then 15% of the time though. The other 85% of the time the bed was completely empty. If you don't use the bed, I would say make the switch. As others have said, the 4Runner is way smoother to drive and everything is kept inside. You can lay all the seats down in the back and have tons of room. I also think the 4Runner is better off-road (if you wheel). Just my .02 cents.
