Wow those ranges are unreal. Now just imagine you are towing a boat or camper and then presumably the ranges he mentioned in the video are reduced even more!

Not 6th gen 4runner but similar, this lifted Land Cruiser is used as a dealership rental vehicle. Not sure what's the story. No one wanted this Land Cruiser with spacer lift + wheel spacer + 285/75R18 tires? No idea.

It looks like there’s enough room where they could have made the tanks a few gallons bigger. It makes no sense.

They were probably asking some absurd price for it and it was sitting collecting dust.

There is more than enough room for another 3-4 gallons if they bothered. Heck the GX comes with a 21 gallon tank and there is still a little room to spare.

But they won't, all those "my first 4R evah!!!!" buyers will just buy it and accept as the norm.

I don't have a horse in this race since i am not in need of another vehicle currently and my tow vehicle has a 48 gallon tank. :D

too many according to the wife, not enough according to my friends.

We have 8 vehicles in the family right now, the F250 is rarely used but does come in handy. My excuse is at least 2-3 of the cars will be kids' first car since 4 of the cars are older than 19 years, and the other 4 were bought in the past 3 years to replace the first 4, but the first 4 cars refuse to die. LOL. That's what happens when we keep buying simple Toyotas and Fords.

Speaking of collecting dust, this was collecting dust since 4/28. It was listed over $69K as I remember and now it's $64K.

He just says it’s longer and narrower.
It looks like there is plenty of room to have made the fuel tank even longer.

I will be the worst kind of car dealer that gets high on his own supply with my hoarding tendencies of older simpler cars. If I had my own car lot it will be filled with low mileage pre-2009 Corollas and pre-2007 Camrys that are priced too high to sell.

My apologies; I posted the wrong video. Tinkerer's Adventure did a comparison between he LC250 and the FJ Cruiser, and mentioned that there is a hybrid-specific cross member on the LC250 that takes away space that otherwise could accommodate a larger gas tank. The GX550 cross member is in a different position because it's not a hybrid, and it has a larger gas tank as a result. Same may apply to the 4Runner? Starts at 9:38.

I think one of Truck King’s videos shows the rear of the tank and how there is plenty of room before the rear axle to have made the fuel tank bigger.

Tinkerer's video showed that too where the FJ had a tank shaped to fill in the space around the rear axle, where as the LC250 just kind of stops quite a bit before the axle and ends in a rounded flat end with no attempt to use the dead space.

I just bought a used 4 runner with 50,000 very clean no accidents , to me it was a no brainer . well established reliability record . ant i was not paying the kind of money that there asking for a new one with an all new drive train aspecialy with whats going on with the new tundra and the taco . If i was buying new after testing both i would go for the new land cruiser in my opinion it rides much better. and is a land cruiser . Ill probably get chastised for saying that

I’m betting the tank size is for manufacturing simplicity and differentiation.

One tank for all 4Runner’s and Land Cruisers (assuming the LC is literally the same part) saves on logistics and inventory.

It also offers a nice small way to upsell, whether it be to the extra efficiency of the hybrid or to the GX.

If Toyota could get us all to buy a GX or LX instead of any of the others, I bet they would try.

It’s definitely not an EV conspiracy thing, especially since it’s Toyota.

But also that things like this have been a hallmark of automotive trims for a very long time.

    From…
    • cruise control being excluded from Maverick XL’s (and many base trucks) in the earlier years
    • last-gen Colorado WT’s not getting an overhead console with the sunglasses holder nor steering wheel media controls
    • full-time 4WD being removed from all lower trims when the 5th gen arrived
    • 4WD Silverados no longer get a two-speed transfer case standard
    • etc.
That said, in my personal experience, the Subaru Ascent has the same size tank and LA driving does not do its fuel efficiency any favors so I felt the squeeze there.

Part of the reason I skipped the Frontier and Xterra as well when shopping, since they have a 21 gal tank.

The 3rd gen’s tank is at 18.5 gallons too which hasn’t stopped the “3rd gen best gen” either. (of course pros, cons I know)

mostly the tank size for any toyota model is roughly determined by what range target toyota is trying to hit for a model (also to add from the post above about simplicity within a model and manufacturing one tank instead of 2-3 types for a model like they did before)

typically toyota likes to get between 400-600 miles range on a tank.

i think the lowest is the corolla in the mid 400's and the camry is like mid 600's (just remember its dependent on a trim within a model)

most BoF i think are in the 500 range while unibodies vary wildly

Toyota wants to upsell the GX which they are making very few of and aren’t available to purchase? That makes no sense.

I wrote: “If Toyota could get us all to buy a GX or LX instead of any of the others, I bet they would try.”

They realistically cannot do that. They still need the volume of less-expensive models and their current production mix reflects this reality.

If you were reasonably certain you could make thousands more per unit made in your factory and still sell every one, wouldn’t you try?

When supply constraints were hitting hard in 2020-2022, many base trims disappeared or were harder to find across the board. (Honda got rid of the base LX trim, brought it back in ‘23, then canned it again, etc.)

Combine that with automakers pairing that with striving to move up-market, selling to the richest is currently a solid business strategy.

See: Mazda’s shift to being more premium and Bentley breaking sales records in 2020.

I don’t expect there to be as many 4Runner SR5’s on lots compared to pre-2020 for this reason, especially with MSRP set thousands below the TRD Sport.

It's amazing what mental gymastics people will come with instead of just considering the possibility that Toyota doesn't care since there is no shortage of "muh first 4Runner EVAH so happy to join the fam!!!" buyers who will buy anything with the name "4Runner" on it.

Hopefully when the well runs dry of 4Runner newbies and they start piling up on the dealer lots like the Tacomas and LCs are Toyota does a refresh and fixes a lot of these dumb flaws.
