I got out in between storms, took some people crystal hunting. And it appears Tahoe National Forest is officially reopened. The barricades are still up, but a new forest order has not been issued to replace the closure which expired on the 31st.

I didn't know it was under a closure (been a busy fall). What was the reasoning on this one? Also, grandparents got my daughter a rock tumbler for Christmas and it's on day number five!

Most of it got closed for the Mosquito Fire, originally so the public wouldn't get in the way of fire suppression, and then so the public wouldn't interfere with remediation efforts. I understand that, because many gates are down now, the area is a muddy mess, and there is an army of utility workers. (We just got new metal power poles, hooray!) Emigrant Gap, Yuba Gap, Grouse Ridge area remained open. This is the first I've seen them close the entire area for so long (Covid and fires closed it for a couple months the prior year) and I don't like the precedent it's setting. I talked to a FS employee with deer tags who said nope, they did not refund any money to hunters, despite them being unable to access their zone.

Have fun with the tumbler. I can hook you up with raw material next time I see you. Make sure you rinse the rocks off before the next stage, so no grit is transferred. And burp it periodically to let gases out.

Yankee Jim's Road a couple days ago. Waterfalls weren't big enough yet so I aborted early.

A few sections of fence fell down and a couple of redwoods leaning over, I got away lucky. Hopefully not much more with tonight's storm.
Used the winch on the 4Runner to strengthen the trees out. Hope all is safe and no damage.
    Thanks for asking.

If anyone ends up actually needing help with fences etc, put it out on this thread. See if we can help each other out. I fixed my roof today (lost 50 ish sq ft) and 4 fence panels. Busy day but got it all handled. Heading to paradise tomorrow with 3 or 4 guys to help a Tacoma guy out with some damage. Strangers helping strangers, good times

Thanks for asking, 2 sections of fence down. That whole run along that side of the property needs to be replaced this summer anyway so I was able to do a quick fix that 'should' hold up for a few months.

What are everyone's thoughts on 4x4 treated posts vs the metal poles w/brackets for the rails?
I ask this as one neighbor has the metal poles and the section that is failing now has rotted 4x4s

Same here! Metal post is the way to go! Had 2 sides replaced when I bought my house 7 years ago and still standing strong, one neighbor didn't want to do it, and he just keeps replacing 4x4's and falls in sections every year. Eventually he'll have all new 4x4 and start all over again.

LOL, I've only ever done 4x4's but it seems the metal poles are the way to go.
That way when they start failing in 20 years I only have to replace the rails and panels.

Yes sir! If I remember correctly, the cost is more for metal post but it pay for itself in the long run.

I had metal poles put down and the fake 4x4 over top to make it pass HOA. That one is really strong!

I don't have HOA (which I absolutely hate) but it reminded of this picture, HOA said his garbage cans had to be behind a fence. ;)SmartSelect_20230110-084912_Google.jpg

That’s priceless! We picked a somewhat neutered HOA so this one isn’t really as bad as the others. Some are friggin brutal.

We are thinking about blasting to our family place in Markleeville on Thursday during the break in the storm and probably going to get stuck there until Tuesday or Wednesday

Just took our 4Runner in for its 40,000 mi service today (because it's free!) Then brought it home and double checked everything that the guy did... Anyways.... Roseville Toyota has one silver SR5 4Runner and one lime green TRD sport (2wd) 2Runner. That's it... No more. Insane! They were asking 10k OVER MSRP! Our e-brake is out of adjustment, they were trying to bill me 200 bucks to adjust it... In my mind that should be regular maintenance under warranty. So .. yeah... F that noise

When we were in Eureka I replaced an original from 1968 redwood fence with badly rotted posts, and I used the metal poles with brackets and redwood fencing. I added a mow strip of concrete so you don't even need to weed whack. Super nice, easy, durable. Easy to replace panels or boards as needed. Poles in concrete should last almost forever. That would 100% be my suggestion.

Thanks Meef, that's what I'm gonna do. Seems like an no-brainer to go with the metal poles.

The roof of my 10x12 shed folded in half, making a nice debris field, not to mention everything getting wet. Then when I hopped over the fence to pick up the mess, my neighbor called the cops on me for trespassing, lol. She's not right in the head.

    Here's dreaming of summer (2006)
