That seems to be the issue. Can’t get the 4wd light off.

What gear are you in RIGHT NOW?

How did you get to work? In the 4R?

Post a picture of your shifter and dash so we know what lights are on. Maybe someone will know the issue.

That wasn't the part of the question that needed to be answered.

What gear is it in right now?

I’d put it in neutral, roll the truck in either direction a couple inches, and then try to disengage 4wd. Sometimes the truck just needs to be moved the tiniest bit.

Have you tried getting it into 2H again?

I'm really curious what's going on with your 4runner.

Thanks guys but I got home a little late and I’m pretty wiped out. Off earlier tomorrow 6pm so I’ll tackle it again then. Appreciate the interest and I’ll update you later.

Start it, put transmission in D, drive it forward at 2 mph for 20', slam the t case straight up into H2, keep driving forward, should snap out of 4wd.

I'm starting to think this guy's fucking around, and / or this is why I generally don't reply to these sort of threads.

I can't imagine having a new vehicle that I couldn't drive and not wanting to figure it out right away. This is driving me nut, and it's not even my vehicle!

Same here. No way on earth I could park it and say "I'll get to it later"...I'd be on that sucker until I figured it out.

I work a lot guys. Took some advice and put it in neutral then started it. Slammed the t case into h2 (made noise) then held my breathe and put it in reverse (in driveway so can’t go forward). It worked! Thanks for the effort/interest from some of you. I really appreciate it.

There's generally no grinding from H2 - 4 and vice versa but good job regardless. Go read the manual and then go exercise the 4wd and get some hands on experience shifting in and out all the gears, use the locker, etc.

I really don't see how being in neutral would affect this.

You can shift from 2wd to 4hi in gear.

You must be in neutral to go from 4hi to 4lo and back.

If the 4runner wouldn't move, you might have been stuck between 4hi and 4lo. That would explain the grinding, if you had been trying to shift from 4hi into 4lo or vise versa while in gear.

I'm glad you got it resolved.

    And, This! ^^^^^
