Reset tire pressure sensors

I recently installed new set of tire + rim + tpms from tirerack. After install I realized that the vehicle won't recognize the new sensors.
Is there anyway to make the car recognize tpms without a dealer/tire place visit? It is a little annoying that tirerack installers don't know that this re-learn step is needed. The installer did not even have the bluetooth TPMS tool for a 23 4Runner.
I am guessing the answer is no and I have to shell out additional $$ to get this done. I have gone through settings and see no option to reset/relearn the new sensors.

 

For a previous vehicle I ordered mounted/balanced tires from tire rack and just picked them up & installed myself. I then went to Discount Tire and they programmed them for free.

 

They will need to be registered as a second set by the installer. I think that our cars can store up to 2 different sets of TPMS ids. Someone with more knowledge can elaborate further.

 

The answer is yes! That is, if you installed the correct sensors. They have to be compatible with the 4Runner TPMS. Apparently the frequency the sensors broadcast on is different depending on the year of your 4Runner.
At least in my 2022 4Runner Off-Road, there is a procedure called "TPMS Registration" outlined in the owner's manual you have to go through. I just went through this with a new set of wheels and tires. Only difference from the owner's manual procedure was that whereas the owner's manual procedure stated to drive the 4Runner for ~ 30 miles at highway speeds, I drove right about 75 miles before the dash display finally showed the correct pressures, indicating the registration process was complete.

Once the "Registration" process is complete, you'll need to set the pressures you want your TPMS light to come on by going through the "Initialization" process, also outlined in the owner's manual.

Again, having a dealer or tire shop do this for you is NOT necessary. I just went through the process as outlined in the owner's manual so if you have questions ask away!

 

On my 22, I put on my setup from my taco, just a few clicks in the dash menu and a short drive and the runner was showing the new setup. Same thing when I switched back to factory setup. So as said above, the sensors have to be compatible and your all set. Good luck.

Use the "change wheel set" function on your instrument cluster menu. Same on '23 no need to program anything or have special equipment. It will do it itself.

 

No such menu option I am afraid, on 23.

 

Wow guess I stand corrected then. Surprised Toyota would backtrack from that option. Maybe it's one of those Canadian options. I use that option to seamlessly change from winter to summer rims. I run the factory ORP rims in winter and the bronze TRD rims in summer and don't have a issue. I just select the option on my "22 ORP and drive it. It might take a few miles for it figure out the change but it always does. No problems.

 

I think you need to look again - and read your owner's manual. I just now pulled up the 2023 4Runner owner's manual on line and on page 430 it outlines how to "register" new TPMS so I have a hard time believing you have a unique machine that is somehow different. The menu system is a bit confusing - it took me a few tries to get to the TPMS portion and "Change Wheel Set" which is what is needed to "register" the new TPMS sensors. And yes, Toyota has to be different than everybody else and call their system TPWS (Tire Pressure Warning System) instead of TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System). And again - I had to drive ~ 75 miles before the new sensors finally registered.

 

Agreed OP needs to look again. Can't see Toyota removing that function but hey mines a '22 not a '23. Benefit of the doubt I guess. But driving ~ 75 miles holy moly I've never had it take more than 10 miles. Though I have a great stretch of road where I can drive non stop at 50 mph that has enough sweeping bends. Any stop and it seems to want to start over.

 

Mine's a 2022 also. Instructions for a 2023 I posted above are exactly the same as in my 2022 owner's manual. I'm sure OP just needs to find all that in his dash display.

Thank you so much for posting this! It worked; I was looking at completely wrong section (on main screen) and did not bother to look elsewhere. I was able to register each new tpws and now just have to drive a few miles to get it to show up as manual says

 

And within a few miles all of my tire pressures are showing (funny enough they are all at 34 psi). But the TPWS warning light is gone after @Yamahamer solution.

Good to hear it worked fast and easy for you. No idea why mine took 75 miles of highway driving to finally register...for a while there it had me worried, thinking I'd have to go to a Toyota dealer (175 miles) to get the system to accept the new sensors. I was impressed that, once the sensors were registered, I was able to "initialize" (calibrate) the sensors so they would not set off the alarm until the pressure went below 25 psi. I drive a lot of rough dirt roads and regularly air down a bit so now I don't have to look at the TPMS light on the dash when I do. Couldn't do that with the TPMS system in my pickup...anything below the factory set pressure on it sets off the TPMS alarm.

 

So… does anyone know how to do this on a2016? The manual says I have to go to the dealer.

 

I wonder if 2014-2019 has a similar process. I have the same scenario on my 2019 as I also swapped wheels and the new TPMS are not linked to my 4runner as of yet.

 

Maybe follow the steps and see? The 2016 is too old (apparently) - there is no "multi-information display" and there is no "vehicle settings". The manual just says bring it in to a dealer for service...
