My 05 4runner sr5 with a v6. There is a good chance and I will know some time tomorrow if it needs a new starter or not. I consider myself to be a back yard/shade tree mechanic. If it does need one. If I have a friend to help me out. Can we do it or leave it to the pros.

I did the starter on my 1999. The starter is located on the passenger side, and I had to undo motor mounts and jack the motor to make room
to take out the starter and get the rebuilt starter in....a real pain....

I had 4 starters replaced in my 2005 SR5 V6 (150,000 mils). I had my Yamaha boat mechanic replace the last one in my driveway ($60). No special tools. He just crawled under the truck and replaced it in 20 minutes.

OEM starter lasted 5 years. Had it rebuilt by a shop but that lasted 12 months. Shop offered to rebuild it again for free, but I asked if I bought them a new AM if they would put it in 4runner.
4 years later the AM starter failed and I purchased a Quality Built Starter ($120) which came with a lifetime guarantee.

The QB has been in there 2 -1/2 years.

I also bought a $78 AM starter at Amazon for a "backup" when the QB fails and I send it back for another new one.

All the starters failed in the same way. You turn the key and nothing. No click (solenoid), no nothing.

IMPORTANT: Don't bother with rebuilds. They last 1 year and are waste of money. An AM starter with lifetime warrantee is only $125 at Amazon by Quality Built. MY QB has been in my 2005 V6 4runner for 2 and 1/2 years.

Video looks good. I notice he didnt disconnect the steering yoke, like others do. When you guys did it, did you disconnect the yoke?

You sound nervous about it if your questioning your own abilities perhaps you should get a price to have it done. Are you experienced enough to run into and over come the unexpected? If you get half way through it and can't finish that'll cost more.
