Interestingly, I went to buy a handgun earlier today (after posting) (with a letter from my employer so no wait period) and the very first question the sales guy asked me when I said "sell me that one" was

"does your ID say 'Federal Limits Apply' on it or not, because we can't sell you a gun if it does"

Possibly Calif only, I don't know; but I wouldn't think that would be a decision made at the state level since citizenship is a requirement to purchase a gun federally.

At the moment it seems Cali has went above and beyond the Federal law on this.... After doing some digging it is gaining traction in other states as well. VA is one it just didn't pass the State legislator yet.

So even being LE you need a letter to purchase or have a State wait period as well?

I either have to do the 10 day wait like everyone else, or I can get a letter that waives the background and waiting period and buy it on the spot. I still have to pay the $25 fee to the DOJ even though they don't do the background.

I don't buy a lot of guns but the ones I buy for sporting stuff I wait the ten days because it's not really fair to cheat the system and get a letter, but if it is legit for work then I get a letter. Letter also allows you to buy off-roster guns (gen 4 and 5 Glocks, Glock 43, etc).

Not relevant to the REAL ID discussion but since you asked...

...also CA just implemented background checks for ammo purchases, which are more or less instant but requires like 3 sheets of paper for every caliber you buy and $1 fee. We can get a letter for those, too, but it's a fresh letter every time, and that isn't going to fly with admin; they'd be writing 25 letters a day...

In NC I got it as soon as available. Why not. If it one day gets us through the lines at the airport I am all for it. I.D. for everyone, especially to vote!

Maryland just recalled 8,000 Real ID’s cause they screwed up. They have little over a month to resubmit or they all will be confiscated....

Went and updated my driver license to Real ID yesterday......Birth Certificate (original), SSN card, current hunting license, voter registration card, and current drivers license was what I needed and got it done.

Got my passport last year for a trip to Japan. WA has what they call an "Enhanced Drivers License" available, but is not issuing them automatically to all drivers. This state is ran by the leftists on the West side, so they are doing all sorts of punitive things to their subjects. Extra fees on everything, stricter gun control, and higher taxes.

Never heard of it before. Just looking into it, doesn't seem any different then getting a normal drivers license. The current state im in is "real-id compliant" and requires the same documents that i had to use in the past. Not a big deal for me really. Only travel by air for work, no waiting in lines. Passports for traveling oconus and concealed carry permit for purchasing never had to wait.
