Never having owned any sort of roof glass/vent before, any reason to be leery of long term issues regarding leaks or mechanical operation of a sun roof on a premium 4runner?

There shouldn’t be any mechanical issues even on a long term, but you can’t go wrong with maintenance like lubing the mechanic.
leaks could appear if the drains are clogged, but that shouldn’t be the case anytime soon. Cleaning and maintenance was discussed already in a tread.

I had an 02 Celica with a moonroof for years. Only issue I ever had was some of the bolts vibrated loose. Didn't really cause any problems just had to be retightened. I also have a moonroof on my 4R and haven't have any issues.

My wife has an '01 limited with 230k and I know she never did any maintenance to the sunroof itself. It still works like a charm without leaks at all.

Just don't do what I did when going through a car wash and accidentally hit the open button instead of close :rain:

Once every couple years use the 3m silicone on the gaskets and flush the drain tubes, more often if parked outside under trees etc. There's online video showing how to flush the tubes with air or water.

Air works pretty well but caution is recommended since too much pressure could cause a lot of work!

I hardly use the sunroof and did experience leak into cabin when maintenance is neglected in my Highlander that I had. So when I was shopping for the 4R last December, an ORP model without sunroof was my preference. Came across mine which also has KDSS, only one configured as such within 200 miles of me. Win win.

I am aware the premium orp 19 was offered without a sunroof.....is the 2020 a sunroof optional as well?

It is optional, most 2020 ORP stocked near me includes sunroof.

Who cares? This never shows everything anyway.
After putting up with the noise from the Jeep Liberty's sky slider for 11 years, I've sworn off all forms of non-solid roofs, and you should, too.

    I never had leaks, though.

I know the 4th gen guys have had heaps of problems with the sunroof. I hope it's been resolved with the 5th gen because my '20 has one.

You can't have a problem with it if you don't have it ;)

So the short answer, SCgman, is no. Like everything else Toyota does, it’s bullet proof. Unless you damage it by getting something stuck in there, it’s good for the life of the vehicle, no problem.

I wouldn't be worried about it. The moonroof on my '03 worked perfectly and never leaked after 257K miles. I also had an '85 Supra from 2000 to maybe 2004 and the moonroof was fine.

I've never personally seen or heard of anyone having a problem with a Toyota moonroof.

The T-tops on my '87 MR2 were a different story, though!
