The throttle will no doubt be more sensitive on the medium and spicy tunes, but you get used to it in 5 minutes or less and your brain adjusts your foot and how you apply pressure to the pedal. The 2023 we had tuned is my wifes daily, i rarely ever drive it. I daily a 2008 4R that has "perfect" tuning, it feels great and everything is really nice about it. When i do hop in the wifes and move it i'll spin the tires on the gravel the first time and then say "whoops" and almost automatically my brain changes the throttle application and foot pressure applied to the throttle without even noticing it. Once you take off a time or two your foot wont smash the pedal 10% just to get you moving anymore.
We have spicy, the super spicy i would only recommend for 34-35" tires and or a lot of weight. We have 305/50-20 and the tune drives like a dream now but it will chirp the tires on pavement if you are not careful.

I found (OTT) the initial tune it was too aggressive, especially after being used to the 4Runner’s stock set up. I already had a throttle controller (Ultimate 9) which I only used to disengage the gas pedal for overnight parking (as part of layered anti theft approach). I ended up with the mild OTT flash, and I use the throttle controller in the Ecomode at its highest setting. Take off is smooth and a gentle to a little laggy, but I’m focused on fuel savings and ease on drivetrain. I also liked when some slow paced offroading dropping the Eco setting more to not have hard sections spin out

Thank you for the explanation. It's like any other ECU tune then.
I guess I will have to see if I can drive one that has this tune to see if it works for me.

I have a 2015 4Runner. Is there an update on when the OTT Tune is going to update the transmission and not just the ECU?

This question has been asked pretty much for the last 3 years since this thread was created in 2022, with no definitive answer to date. What's interesting is the list of all the other vehicles, all with transmission tuning included, during and prior to the 2013-2019 run of the 4R, which doesn't include it...

    4wd??

Please keep an eye on our socials for an update posted here in the coming weeks. ;)

The difference is that the TCU calibration data on the vehicles, which we currently do not list transmission support for, have the calibration data for the TCU stored on a seperate chipset on the ECU board. All the tools on the market only pull data from the chipset which contains the 'engine calibration' data leaving the data on the 2nd chipset (TCU) untouched.

Getting the data from that 2nd chipset is the challenge. As mentioned above please stay tuned to our socials in the coming weeks and expect a post here.

JustDSM - yes my 2015 4Runner is a 4WD Trail Premium and I'll keep watching to see if OTT makes an announcement.

Searching on your website. I noticed you dynod both a 5gen 4runner and a 2010+ fj. How did the fj put down a decent bit more power and torque then the 4runner?

Our web developer mixed up the charts.

Thanks for pointing that out, we'll get it corrected. The numbers are the same between the FJ/5G 4Runner (in automatic transmission trim)

    Nice.

Question for you... can you eliminate the check engine light from adding headers to 2020 4runner

Can we? It's possible, but we don't defeat emissions in our calibrations.

I dont have emissions testing. Does adding headers require a custom tune?

We don't turn off CEL's, which is a form of deleting federally mandated emissions components.

Got a call from my local OTT rep who did the ECU tune on my 2017. He said the TCU tune is done and more info will be available soon in order to schedule for the software to be installed.

If we do decide to get the transmission parameters adjusted (guessing that's what this is alluding), it will require the whole ecu to be done... So, another full price tuning session?

My tuner stated that the TCU update will be free of charge since I already paid for the ECU tune

    Free update for existing customers

Does not require the whole tune to be reflashed. As mentioned in another post I made earlier, the TCU calibration is contained on a separate chipset than the engine calibration. So we can update the TCU independently of the engine calibration.

What is the difference between the 2010-2012 and the 2020+
What makes the 2013-2019 different? Are you doing trans tuning on the 2010-2012 and 2020+? I have a 2023 done and i am pretty sure we talked and the 2023 did not get any trans tuning.

2010-2012 & 2020+ have the TCU calibration data embedded within the engine calibration on 1 chipset. We have the ability to tune it directly with one single flash. We have always had the TCU updates "embedded" into our tuning for these vehicles.

The 2013-2019's do not (as explained above) and require a 2nd flash for the TCU chipset.

If OTT tuned your 2023, it most certainly has the TCU calibrated. It's designed to be seamless and not jump out at you, so it's doing its job, :) I promise you. If we put it back to "stock," you'd notice the difference. ;)

I just got the TCU for my 2019 4runner. It holds the gearing for all power band 1st to 5th with no struggle and shifting is smooth. No more uphill battle with throttle. Feels like im driving a stock 4runner with 35s.

You should get the tune even if you have stock gears and 32s. You will enjoy every minute you drive specially going uphill.

Nice! Enjoy it and reach out if you need any adjustments. It’s $free.99 for updates.

It makes a huge difference. Find your local tuner and get it done.

VF tuner did release an EROM a few years back that allows a gearlock function in S-mode. It’s been a while since I played with it, but it did work at one time. If it is still working, it may only work on 2020+ 5GT4R’s as those are the only years VF has TCU access and the EROM capabilities.

@JustDSM is this something that can be added to the current tunes? We can retest it in mine if needed.
