I have a 2018 4runner that I changed oil on at 5k dealer (Toyota) did at 10k. Yesterday I attempted to change my oil again at 15k, drained oil and went to remove oil filter with metal Toyota filter wrench and end up breaking off one of the metal tabs on the filter which left a pin hole in canister and still could not budge loose. I used a 18 in breaker bar with 3/8 drive and all I could do is strip out the inside of the 3/8 drive. I then had to call a tow truck to take 4 runner back to dealership (20 miles) where they got the damaged filter off, install new one and fill with oil. $195 plus $175 towing bill.!!! I asked the mech. how he got it off and they use a 64mm Bluepoint steel 14 facet socket with 24 in breaker bar. I think that’s how they install them too. My Question is, I thought those filters should only be 12 ft. lbs tight. They also said they get about 2 to 3 of these problems a week.$$$$$ I really thought if I took my car to authorized dealer I would be much better off then the discount oil change store. Has anyone of you that do you own changes run into this problem?

Nope. Problem is you let someone else change oil dealer or not.

Lube techs are your fresh off the street employees with more than likely, minimal knowledge on how to properly do the job.

Be happy they didn’t drain the transmission and overfill the engine

Funny how the dealer states they run into that problem 2 or 3 times a week since they are the ones gorilla tightening the filters/filter covers in the first place. Total BS, hope you get your money back.

So it sounds like we should be using this socket instead of the ones with slots for the tabs

The one with the slots are 10x better. It grabs the tabs and it also has the flutes or whatever you call it to grab the rest of the housing.

Or the one I do does.

There is zero reason to change synthetic oil every 5,000 miles

Unless you’re in stop and go traffic every damn day. Takes two hours to go 20 miles here. Shit, I’m at 40k and looking at replacing brake pads soon.

sorry for your loss .. you should have called the dealership and tell them that they over torqued the filter cap and it is now leaking . I hope you have your paper work on their free oil servicing ..if they do not give back your loss then post this dealership on facebook and here so others will stay away from the idiots that work there.

I never had any problems changing my oil , cap comes off easy .. ya 12 ft lbs and oil on the cap O ring NO problem..

surprised you did not mention they broke the pan bolts.

Seen way too many threads like this. And it's not a Toyota thing, it's a dealership thing. Go to any manufacturer's forums and you'll read the same horror stories about dealership oil changes.

I owned VWs for years and learned how to do nearly all of my own routine maintenance because of botched dealership oil changes.

I'm not even going to bother with that Toyotacare BS.

I am going to take mine in for the services, but will tell them I am doing my own oil changes.

I don't want some high school kids touching my car.

With my luck they'll fill the windshield washer fluid reservoir with oil lol...

Still on the fence about dealer doing anything I brought it in for the 5,000 "check" but that didn't include oil. I did do oil somewhere around 5,000 miles just because I always will synthetic or not but a garage I like to use did it.

Well that’s strange.... when I look up recommendations directly for the 2016 4Runner you own, the manufacturer gives multiple reasons/conditions that you should change it every 5,000 miles. I’m sure the engineers that designed it don’t know what they are talking about though.
