So, I finally wrote an email to Toyota Engagement Center on only receiving 1 Key Fob with the delivery of my 2023 Limited 4Runner in January. Here is the feedback I got. Still very disappointing with this whole thing and to keep using chip shortage as the issue is BS. I work in the Semiconductor world both on the manufacturing side at one point in my life and now on the key Vendor side of supplying equipment for the past 40 years. Yes, it did impact some supply chains because of the Covid crisis but to keep using it now is just an excuse.

A Brand Engagement Center Advocate has added a comment to your inquiry.

    Dear Scott,

Thank you for contacting Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. and congratulations on the purchase of your new 2023 Toyota 4Runner! We appreciate the opportunity to provide further insight to your key inquiry for your 4Runner.

Due to the global semiconductors shortage, Toyota is facing a shortage of microchips for our Smart Key entry systems. As a result of the semiconductor shortage, Toyota will be delivering vehicles to dealers and customers with only one Smart Key. We appreciate the opportunity to clarify that, owners will receive a letter by first class mail advising you when to return to an authorized dealership to receive your second key. The timing of this notification is expected sometime in the second quarter of this year (subject to change).

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused and appreciate your patience with this matter. Thank you for your understanding during this time.

We hope this information has been helpful. Your comment has been documented at our National Headquarters. If we can be of further assistance, please feel free to contact us.

    Sincerely,

    Chakilla
    Toyota Brand Engagement Center

My dealer suggested I call Toyota last week. I was told late summer, previous update the dealer had was June. Moving in the wrong direction.

I am surprised: I received mine in April and got two fobs. The dealer mentioned shortages were over and now everyone got two keys.
Maybe you were just on the cusp?

I believe that 2023 4Runners manufactured after Jan. 1, 2023 went back to being delivered with 2 key fobs - these vehicles were probably not delivered to dealerships until mid-late February, at the earliest. 2023 4Runners that were manufactured before Jan. 1, 2023 (I think mostly in Nov.-Dec. 2022) where the ones delivered with only 1 fob. Many of these vehicles were delivered to dealers in December, January, February, and even into March. Someone in another thread posted something that looked like a communication timeline/schedule from Toyota related to delivery of the fobs to owners who only received one at vehicle delivery. It showed that communication to 4Runner owners that still need their second fob would occur in June. However, I think it also said the timing was based on estimates and could change. That lines up with what is in the post at the top of this thread - "notification is expected sometime in the second quarter of this year (subject to change)". June is the end of the second quarter - so unless something delays it - all the new 4Runner owners who only got 1 fob should receive a letter from Toyota letting them know when/where they can get their 2nd fob. Although I think this issue has been mishandled by Toyota (I understand the need to go to delivering only 1 fob - but the communication from Toyota has been really bad) - I have to admit that I have not been negatively impacted by it (yet)- and I would take delivery of my 4Runner again knowing I would temporarily have only 1 fob. In the 4 months I have had the 4Runner I haven't driven it more than ~2 hours away from home. But in the next few months I will be driving it on a few trips that will take me 10-12 hours from home - and having only 1 fob when on those trips is going to be less than ideal. Obviously I would strongly prefer that both my wife, and I, have a fob when we are that far from home. Again, I think Toyota could not have done a worse job informing buyers that only got 1 fob what the plan was to get them the 2nd fob. If they truly didn't know when they could deliver the 2nd fob they should have clearly communicated that. The dealer I bought from in January told me that I should have the 2nd fob by April - and others in this forum have communicated that they were told many different things. I just find it odd that Toyota didn't make some effort to communicate the details clearly and uniformly to those affected. I really don't think that if the communication had been "you will only get 1 fob at delivery, you will get a 2nd fob at a later date that we cannot now estimate" that many buyers would have refused delivery and backed out of their deal. At the time there were obviously more buyers than available vehicles - if a handful of people refused delivery with 1 fob those vehicles would have quickly sold to someone else. An aversion to saying "we don't know" is all I can come up with to explain the poor communication.

FYI - I looked at the Toyota communication schedule (in another thread) for delivering 2nd key fobs that I mentioned in the above post. Between 11/7/2022 and 12/28/2022 16,941 4Runners were manufactured and shipped with only 1 fob. These 16,941 4Runners are in the first phase of the plan to communicate 2nd fob delivery to their owners - phase 1 is currently scheduled for June 2023. But it does say it is subject to change. We'll see.

Is this a US thing? My 2023 T4R was delivered to me April 26th with both key fobs.

I don't think it is a US thing. Your 4Runner, delivered in late April, was likely manufactured after Jan. 1, 2023 when they went back to delivering 2 fobs.

Makes sense, my manufacture date was March 2023. Surprised they don't take care of the backlog first though.

Guess no one is bothering to look at the thread linked in post 2.

I wasnt aware they were only giving out one key. My sales guy was could have been new, but he was like "why does this only have one key?, thats odd, no worries we'll make you another one". So I got my second key a few days after I bought it (about 2-3 weeks ago). Guess we'll see if I get a letter in the mail saying I get another key.

Another one that doesn't read the link.

Yours was outside the time frame that one key was provided.
