For you guys and girls that have driven both... are ON-road suspension characteristics very different between the SR5 and the OR? How about on the highway?

Is the OR much softer? I do need a working truck for light off road use (ie. not for "fun off road"). But 98% of my time is spent on the hiway.

I drove both. I started with the SR5 and my wife and I both noticed how much roll in the corners and nose dive it had. She gets motion sickness so that really put a damper on my talking her into a new vehicle, until I drove the ORP. I figured the off road inspired suspension should be stiffer, therefor less roll and dive. I was just concerned about it being too rough. I am a car guy though so I do like to feel the road, just not through the seat. I love the ORP ride. It rides like a truck, but a well put together one that lets you know what the road conditions are like without being rough. Still a little nose dive when you hit the brakes, but nothing like I felt in the SR5. I had a Chrysler 300 before this for my DD, and the 300 was rediculously quite on the highway. This isn't that quite, (tires and lack of undercarriage sound deadening) but you can still have a conversation with whoever is in the back without straining to hear. Plenty quiet on the highway in my opinion.

So you think the SR5 is softer than the OR? I would have expected it to be opposite.

I much prefer the softer ride in my OR Tacoma than the SR5 Tacoma.

I thought the sr5 and OR had the same exact suspension?! Some drive train differences. But same suspension?? Am I high?

Edit- now the PRO may be different. But I thought the thread was OR and SR5.

I'm pretty sure they are the same suspension... difference might be whether it had KDSS or not..? KDSS goood...

I think you should locate a dealer that has an OR w/KDSS and see how that rides, KDSS option is not offered here in Texas through Toyota Gulf States distributor. My buddy located an OR w/KDSS in Colorado and swears by it when he went for a test drive in a SR5 for comparison even through he knew he was going to buy the KDSS equipped version. When my stock 2012 SR5 had 125k it got too soft and yes that nose dive and body roll was hideous so I knew it was time to upgrade.

I might have to dig deeper into this because I definately felt a huge difference between the SR5 and the OR. My ORP doesn't have KDSS.

"edit" I may need to look closer at my ORP...everything I'm reading about the difference with KDSS describes how mine handles compared to the SR5..

I am certain that there is no difference between the SR5 suspension and the TRD off road. If there is, Toyota certainly isn't talking about it!

They are the same unless you have KDSS. Put Bilstein 5100’s set at 2.5” with stock springs up front with Bilsteins and 1.5” spacer lift in rear on my 2018 OR. Huge difference!

I'm wondering if the poster who thought there was a difference test drove an off road edition with over inflated tires? Mine was delivered with 50psi!

thanks guys. Consensus is SR5 and OR are the same suspension... but KDSS is available as an option on the OR.

Yes. All suspension components (coils/shocks/swaybars) on all 5th gen Runners are exactly the same, with a few exceptions:

    1. The Limited has hydraulically-linked shock absorbers that are cycled to limit body roll and improve on-road drivability. It's called XREAS and it's standard equipment.

    2. The OR/Trail can be optioned with KDSS, a system with hydraulically-coupled heavy duty swaybars. At speed, the system works to provide stiff roll-control for better on-road manners. At low speed, the hydraulic pressure is relaxed and the bars are "un-linked" for more articulation. It's not quite like disconnecting swaybars, but a similar idea.

    3. The Pro has unique coilovers in the front and unique rear shocks (the rear coils remain the same). Up to 2018, Bilstein was the supplier of the shocks and Eibach made the front coils. In 2019 they switched to Fox coils/shocks. The Pro cannot be optioned with KDSS.

Very interesting. Checked under mine and certainly no KDSS, however night and day difference between my friends stock 17 SR5 and my stock 18 ORP. I went and test drove the 18 SR5 before buying mine and would not have bought it if it drove the same. My wife couldn't stand the test drive because it made her sick swaying in the corners. Just a little confused now..lol

So we can surmise that the SR5 and TRD OR are the same suspension, so long as the OR isn't equipped with KDSS?

Did you confirm you have KDSS?
