Just purchased a stock 2016 TP with halogens. My 2010 TE has alpharex with leds in the low and I use my off road lights for high beam when needed. Not the point here. I'll be swapping all 2010 compatible upgrades over to the 2016, headlights can not. I've been reviewing aftermarket headlights and just don't trust them though the 2010 set up I have has been fine for a few years. Which headlight should I be combing ebay for from the list in post #211? I just want an easy plug and play for lows first then a nice high beam would be a benefit, quads if that is the best. Then which harness and lastly, where do I go/link for the harness? Thank you in advance!

    Bi-LED Low/High beams ($697.30)
    L: 81070-35610
    R: 81140-35620

Though if you're combing FB marketplace or other classifieds, most people rip them out without knowing part numbers.

All headlights starting in 2021 are LED. Only the Pro and Limited are LED low-beam AND high-beam for 2021.

All headlights are LED low and high starting in 2022.

On the topic of led high beam vs quad high beam harness options, after testing in my workshop (I recently got a headlight but I don’t own a T4R) I was impressed with how terrible the led “high” beam actually is.

The led high beam only harness is more complicated to build and offers no advantages. Picking the quad high beam harness is a no brainer to me but I offer the third option for those who want to exactly match 2022+ behavior.

It could be like a Johnny Cash Cadillac, with one on the left and two on the right (but when he pulled out the switch, all three came on).

Alright needed to get a pigtail made for my main headlight plug for a 2024. I just need to know which wire controls which function. Im assuming the black is ground, per usual. I need to know which is the shutter and low beam. Both driver and passenger side have the same wire bundle with the same colors.

See post 65 on Tory's build thread (https://www.4runners.com/threads/mynameistorys-not-a-build-thread.5225/page-3#post-347906).
It states "As most have figured out, red is to light the lamp, blue is to activate the high-beam shutter, and black is a common ground."
I have not personally confirmed this but Tory spearheaded the original headlight harness, therefore, I expect this info to be accurate.

    @mynameistory

just wanted to confirm with you this is true. I asked Dave (as he made me a replacement pigtail plug) but he wasnt sure which was which on the headlight end.

Fairly certain this is still the case. Off the top of my head I don't remember what the wire colors are coming from the halogen-equipped trucks.

I saw the pic quoted above and it makes sense. I'll find out soon enough when I hook it up.

So I finally was able to pick up the set of 2023 Bi-LED headlights to install on my 2019 Limited. FedEx wouldn’t deliver to my office due to damage in downtown Houston.

Also received the Quad harness, thanks FBC.

The harness connections seem pretty straightforward but just want to confirm I have it correct before I start the install process. I will get the 9011 for hi beam later. Is the 9011 a direct pnp or do I need to modify the bulb tabs.

Lastly for anyone who has done this on a limited, do I have to remove the bumper completely and unplug the fogs and sensors or is there enough play with the plugs to let the bumper sit/lean on a small table while I remove and swap the headlights.

    thank you

I've been reading the thread and I appreciate the effort OP and a few others have expended.

As far as the quad LED headlight thing goes, I see similarities to my project for 2022+ models, and I wanted to just drop a link to that here in case someone is looking around for alternatives or other inspiration. I see no reason it couldn't be used for pre-22 models using retrofitted LED headlight assemblies from 22+.

    https://www.4runners.com/threads/di...headlights-replacing-drls-in-22-models.38127/

There are some advantages and disadvantages - IMO the biggest couple advantages are cost ($220 or so all in), ease of installation, not risking any issues with factory wiring / plugs / relays, and (unless I missed it) the ability to run all lights including fogs at the same time. Downsides are the fact that an extra switch is required so you aren't really able to use just the headlight switch or high beam switch to activate the extra lighting, and you lose your DRLs.

All done. Was easier than I expected. Thanks again for the info in the thread.

Do the 9011 bulbs for hibeam really make a difference?

    thanks

I think it's a good idea for the 22+ trucks that already have the LED headlights, especially with the rather underwhelming stock high-beams in the projectors. If you're creative with it, you might be able to co-opt the shutter signal and use it to trigger a relay, so the extra bulbs fire exactly in line with the high-beam stalk. I like being able to have handy controls right on the steering wheel for all high-beam functions. That way you're not fumbling under the dash for an extra switch when you come around a corner and there's unexpectedly an oncoming driver you don't want to dazzle.

Depending on the brand of 9005/9011 bulbs you're replacing, you can expect a 30-40% increase in brightness. No matter what, keep something in the bulb socket and attached to the wiring so you don't get contact corrosion or moisture buildup in the reflector lens.

    Cool

Thanks. Just to confirm with my setup, there’s no way to have LED DRL? I am asking because I have a set of the xenon depot pro LED 9005 that I had in my old headlights. Would be cool to be able to use these as DRL and quad hi beam.

I went from 9005s to 9011s. They are definitely brighter.

Those would work just fine. I used to have the same set but switched back to halogen as they are more performant. If you like the cooler temperature light that's up to you. The high-beam pattern isn't nearly as important as the low-beam projectors from a pattern standpoint.

I appreciate you responding to my questions.

as to installing the XD Pro LED 9005 for the DRL in my new to me bi-led headlights. I am using the quad adapter. Do I need to use the PWM driver that comes with 9005 LED since my truck is wired for DRL/hibeam and the new bi-led headlights are just DRL. Just want to be sure I don’t fry anything or blow fuses.

    thanks

Yes you will need the drivers installed inline in order to dim the LED bulbs for DRL use. LED chips light up nearly instantaneously in comparison with slower halogen filaments. PWM tuned for halogen lights will dim halogen bulbs, because the pulses will barely warm the filaments to a dull brightness. Without the drivers, the LED lights in DRL mode will simply turn on at full power with a slight flicker. Very annoying to oncoming traffic to be blasted by what are essentially your high-beams.

I actually had occasion to be in front of a Limited a few days ago, and that guy had LED upgrades in his DRL spots but had obviously done no other work. They were pulsating noticeably and were super annoying to me. I was in a car so his lights were right in line with my vision in the rearview. I wanted to get out and give him the link to this thread at a red light!

    Thanks.

I will give the LED a try making sure I use the PWM harness to keep them lit at DRL minimal output.

We enjoy a lot of freedom to modify our cars and trucks as we like, but lighting is one thing that we should choose carefully to make sure we are staying legal and courteous to other drivers on the road.
