Hello Everyone, I am new to the 4Runner world. I am looking to buy my first 4Runner. I live in Michigan and most vehicles here develop rust problems. The 4Runner I am looking to buy is no exception. It is a 4x4 Limited V8 2003 4Runner with 150k Miles. The service record is impeccable. All the fluids have been changed last year. It was started for the first time in 6 months and had no ticks, or knocks and ran like butter. 4Lo engaged but was kind of loud. However, it has a rusty frame. I need a second option for buying this vehicle. I spent a good time looking up and down the frame and hitting it with a hammer to feel for weak points, the frame seemed solid. The frame has significant scaling in a few areas. There weren't any weak points I found that had holes, except the rear cross member which is really rusted. I feel like if I wanted I would have someone weld in a new rear crossmember, or at least reinforce it. The piece doesn't seem to be load-bearing, but probably would not be a good idea to tow heavy. I have linked below a file with pictures of the frame.

The questions I have: Is this 4Runner worth buying? If so, how much would you spend?

As someone who bought a 2004 and had rust issues, keep looking. They tend to get holes in the inner frame right behind the front wheels. I had two on mine and spent 2k to fix them.

The areas in the front wheels is actually not bad. Just the ass end of the frame is rotted.

what would be a good price to pay for a 2003-2004 4runner

Nope, not me. There’s only a small amount of kinetic energy and blind faith holding that thing together.

Every 4Runner is like this in my area. What are some better options. I am willing to spend up to 10k

Hey I hear you, Gill2984. The older ones are like that up here in Ontario to, for the most part. I’d suggest looking for one that has been oiled, rust proofed or fluid filmed. They’re the only ones worth buying in the rust belt that are old.

no one in Michigan gives a crap to oil their frame. They don’t do any state inspections here maybe that has something to do with it.

I didn’t buy the rusty 2003 4Runner. There is another one 2003 SR5 215k miles, he is saying 5.2k. It needs a timing belt and probably some other maintenance done. So hopefully I can get it for 4k. I can do all the maintenance myself. Hopefully the frame is less rusty.

AFTER taking a second look, I'd PASS.

I have a 2005 4runner with 150,000 miles. The underneath of mine is not 1/2 as bad (mines got normal, superficial rust underneath) as the pictures you posted. As long as the upper body is rust-free, I say go. The body and paint on my 2005 are like brand new.

Check it with a good mechanic for $100. It will save you money in the long run, and may give you bargaining for better price. I don't see an asking price on this 2003?

4runners can go 500,000 miles on engine and tranny.

So you're saying as long as the upper body is rust free, go for it? With the underbody showing this:

I don't think so. It doesn't take a good mechanic to know that is a disaster waiting to happen.
