Rawal here from Upstate New York. Just picked up a 2015 Toyota 4Runner Limited 4WD last week. it’s a reliable vehicle, powerful and pretty comfortable for its size. Loving it so far.

I picked up the car because I am a road warrior, outside sales and operations requires me to put atleast 200 miles on my truck weekly. Although gas mileage is not our best friend here, but my company reimburses me for that so I am going all in for a vehicle that does not let me stranded waiting on AAA in the snow and sleet around the Adirondacks region.

I do go off road on our yearly trip out west, this year focusing on Montana, Idaho, Utah, Colorado and Arizona. Since it’s a big trip and I would love to keep our budget low, what modifications would you recommend for a perfect car camper... I want to start with some good traction mud/off-road tires but I am not willing to change the wheels this early. It is a limited so I do know my tire choices are pretty limited. I love the way the truck handles on straight roads (which is majority) of my driving and I do not want to change the good looking wheels this early. I do 80% on road and 20% off-road driving. I will not be towing anything but a tow hitch carrier with a few hundred pounds of camping stuff. My dog, wife and I will be in the back of the truck sleeping at nights so using that space for all the luggage.

I would appreciate any advice, any help and any tips offered about driving and modifying the vehicle. Pleased to be here and looking forward to share this passion with you all.

    Thank you,

    Rawal

Welcome from an Upstate NY native (I’m originally from Saratoga Springs). Modifications will depend on your priorities and budget (the options are as big as your bank account balance or credit limit) but a decent set of AT tires are a good investment. Aside from that it really depends on what type of car camping you want to do. You could spend big and get a rooftop tent or dirtbag it and sleep in the back of the truck.
