just bought my first 4runner (2018 limited) in july, and i’m hooked! i just have a few questions.. forgive me if they’ve been asked before i just haven’t found any responses.

power running boards... has anyone put them on their limited successfully? i want them so bad!

lift/leveling... i would love to have mine atleast leveled. is this possible?

maintenance/oil changes? how often for oil changes, how do you turn off the dang maintenance light? do you find it easier to take it somewhere for an oil change or DIY?

annnnd lastly, i have the platinum warranty and so far, i’ve had 2 dash speakers blow out in 2 months (not playing music/bass too loud), i bought this 4runner from the largest toyota dealer in louisiana and they state they’ve never seen this issue in any of the 4runners. luckily, warranty replaces them no cost.

any advice or help is truly appreciated. the 4runner has been my dream car since i got a drivers license :)

Welcome to the forum, most people i know that have power running boards have trouble with them operating correctly for very long. I’m pretty sure you can lift, or level your limited, and diy oil changes are best if possible.

    Welcome from RVA!

About the maintenance light on your dashboard, idk if it is the same procedure with the 5th gen but you can try this procedure for the 4th gen here:

    https://www.4runners.com/threads/maintenance-light-flashing.6862/

There is plenty of info here on this subject. Hopefully you’ll get rid of that light after this method.

    Welcome!
Being that you purchased a previously owned 4R, I would have someone who knows their Toyotas (not the dealership!) check the head unit and amp, to check for previous audio mods, and/or any hack jobs they might have done trying to get it back to stock for trade in. You could just have pinched wires, or their could be a random resistor added, inline amp etc. hiding somewhere.

Running boards- can't help you there, but I too got the impression that the retractable ones were more coin and trouble than they're worth, longevity wise.

Oil- DIY! Every 10k of normal driving, use the recommended oils, fluids, filters and such. If you tow long distances, drive in dust a lot, or in extreme temps then you will want to do it at least every 5k.
I strongly suggest getting the Motovix filter wrench and funnel kit, it makes it so much easier. Other great mods to add your first time are a Fumoto valve and swapping the OEM plastic filter housing cap with an OEM aluminum one. Doing a little extra work upfront makes doing subsequent changes much easier and cleaner.

Lift- Yep, this is easily doable, as are new wheels/tires, though you cannot go very wide on a Lmtd. Go to the "5th Gen" subforum, then search, then advanced search, check "search this forum only" and search for "5Th Gen Limited Lift" etc., and you'll get much better results. Several members here have Limiteds that they've modded to heck, and they've done pretty smart stuff that you'll probably dig.

Hope this helps, welcome to the forums!
