Hey All, seems like a couple of NYC people posting up here? I am learning that a very impressive majority of people do their own work. I definitely would love to get into that with a little more time and space but in the meantime, does anyone have a reco for a solid NYC (or ideally Brooklyn) Toyota mechanic? I just picked up my "new" 3rd gen today and am hella stoked but I wanna get a couple things done to sooner than later. Much obliged!!

Depends on what "work" you are looking for a mechanic to do. I don't know a good general mechanic so would be interested to hear what others say. I do most of my own maintenance and mods. I did use East Coast Toyota in NJ for routine maintenance and they did a good job for me, though admittedly I haven't gone in a couple years as do it myself now.

For mods, when I am not in mood to do myself, I drive out to OK4WD on the NJ/PA border - https://ok4wd.com

My first suspension swap to Bilsteins they did. I also went to them to install UCAs after I had replaced the Bilstein with Dobinsons and couldn't get alignment where I liked it, as I just wasn't interested in getting back under the car again for a bit. Overall, I think they do really good work when it comes to mods and they have a strong following.

Thanks M! Good stuff to keep in mind although I hope to find somewhere closer to home.

Talking timing belt, radiator, ball joints (although these seem like a relatively easy diy)... basic stuff like that. No mods yet!

None. Bone Stock. EXCEPT: Brushguard, tow hitch, both welded to the frame. It's good to have friends and a fully equipped garage!
    Welcome to the forum!

Those bits and pieces aren't hard to replace at all. Heck, I'm a 60 year old radar tech, and I wouldn't hesitate to tackle any of them.
    Have fun!

I would really love to try it Pat! I am in the middle of launching a business and just won't really have much time for the next few months.

Thank you for the welcome, and I will definitely get my hands dirty eventually ;)

Two choices, depending on how important the "stuff" that needs replacing is at the moment. How critical they are to keeping the tuck running well. You can take it to a mechanic, or DIY.
I've owned my 2 87's almost since they were new, and I got to love working on them both. It even got to where my middle daughter loves to work on the pickup too. I let her drive it when she was stationed at Camp Pendleton. She was only a couple hours away from Yuma, where we lived back then, so no problem. She keeps bugging me to sell it to her so she can teach her 3 sons to drive, and work on, it too :D
It's very rewarding to find something that needs fixing, and fixing it yourself. Great feeling, IMO.

    Good luck, and have fun!
