New member here, hoping to replace a 2001 Pathfinder with a new 4runner. Just started looking online and test drove a new Trail model. The models/options/packages are very limiting and confusing to say the least. Here is my ideal 4runner:

Trail Premium, SR5 Premium, or TRD Pro

    Must have:
Magnetic gray. All one color, or black hightlights. Don't care for silver on Trail front/rear end
All black leather (no black/gray as in SR5P)
Black dash & console, not silver
Lever-type transfer case (not plastic knob)

    Would be nice:
    3rd row seats
    Moonroof
    Hood scoop
TRD wheels (I know these can be added easily)

It seems from the Toyota website that most of these are mutually exclusive. It really sucks that I need to give up lot of options I want and still pay 40K.

I'm currently leaning towards TRDP, it's the closest to what I want. But it's a bit of an overkill for me, I already have a Jeep Wrangler for offroading, and TRDP seems to be missing a lot of options. Is this really missing heated seats, and homelink? So I can't open my garage door? I think the black dash is really sharp, but it only comes on non-premium models or TRDP? I was really hoping TRDP would have the 4wd shifter, but seems it doesn't. The knob I tried on a Limited in a showroom came right off:( I really like the all black leather/read thread interior.

Dealers I spoke to weren't much help. Is it possible to order a 'custom' 4runner with options from different models?

    Thanks,

    John

    Pablo,

That's the website I've been using to find the right options and model.

If I pick Trail, here is the interior, looks great in black, also 4wd shifter instead of a knob
    [IMG]TrailDash.jpg
Trail Premium I get silver, not what I prefer
    TrailPremDash.jpg
Body wise, Trail and Trail P get the silver panels
    TrailPrem.jpg
I prefer the solid color look of the SR5
    SR5Prem.jpg
But I really love the gray/black look and grill of TRDP

Since you have the TRDP, do you have the homelink/garage door opener? Heated seats? Moonroof? Shifter or knob for transfer case? I know I sound like a really picky buyer, but if I pay 45 grand these options should be a no brainer:), no matter how off-road worthy the SUV is... I really appreciate your input.

For what it's worth, you could always buy the Trail/Premium model and make the exterior mods yourself which may save you money in the long run - compared to flat out buying the TRD Pro. This will give you the manual 4x4 transfer case which you prefer along with the black "leather" moonroof and so on. You can vinyl wrap/paint/plastidip the silver bumper trim to the black look you like and buy the TRDP bumper/wheels. Just a thought - good luck!

Thanks for the feedback. Right now I'm leaning towards TRDP, if I go with Trail Premium + KDSS + TRD wheels, I'm close to what TRDP MSRP is. But getting a deal on TRDP is another story. Right now I'm trying to get internet and Costco pricing from local dealers for both models and see what the real difference is. Also looked at used TRDP, most are higher than MSRP on new ones. Did not expect that...

BTW, the Toyota 'built my 4runner' and 'compare' web site is not accurate. Pictures show TRDP with a t-case knob instead of a shifter, and compare function shows you don't get homelink and auto mirror. That originally seemed odd to me, but it looks like these come with the TRDP package. Still no moonroof though, but I have my jeep for that.

Installed Rago brackets and 4" cube ditch lights. Weather tech mats. Cargo net. Cargo mat. Ordered Gobi rack with ladder.
:hattip:If you can find a TRD PRO you might want to buy it. Only 3000 or so made and sent to the States. They are going above sticker where we live. It's probably a car you could drive for 2 years and sell it for what you paid for it. Plus the ride across fields and terrain at speed is incredible. The Engineers at Toyota designed a great vehicle.

I was just checking cars.com, looks like there are just a few in gray within 500 miles of central NJ. Whether they still available is another question. I didn't think it would be that hard to find these. I never paid MSRP before, definitely not over sticker price... I'll let you know what happens, I guess good thing is I'm not in a hurry. But thanks for confirming that TRDP is worth the money.

Very limited production ..I seriously doubt any 2016's are still available. May have to wait for a 2017.

Wasn't easy, but I was able to find a new TRDP in quicksand under msrp, and picked it up yesterday. Kind of a long story, will post more details and pictures later.
