Mid/long range travel….educate me

    I’m pretty sure the 74weld kit comes with lower control arms. Website says that each side is 3.75 in wider than stock. Wouldn’t that increase total travel at the wheels?
    The kit price seems higher from what I recall, it’s at 20k now. It seems to have everything including new rear axle shafts. It mentions something about single shear or double shear steering options, but I dont know what that means.

    As far as stock geometry on the IFS, what I meant is that it lets you keep the LCAs flat, in the middle of travel range, which theoretically will give you the best articulation.

    I think the kit requires at least 36 in tires, but new brake calipers are included. Presumably they’re better than stock to deal with the larger tire diameter.

    All this said, 20k might get you a nice old Unimog.

    I don't believe so. I certainly could be wrong here... The portals push the wheels further out but that does not inherently increase travel. Longer upper and lower control arms together can. But physically pushing the wheel out with spacers or portals does not increase travel.

    You can see this with many custom baja rigs:

    That said, with IFS you are sacrificing available down travel when you lift. Soo the portals do mean you'll keep the factory amount of travel with a 3.88" of lift. So that's certainly something to consider!

    The way I view this is long travel is better for desert running, whoops and extreme articulation while portals are better at maintaining factory geometry while providing lift and superior ground clearance. Pros and cons to everything!

    What system you use depends on the type of wheeling you do and your budget. The 74weld portals with their control arms are not going to keep with with LT and bypasses in the desert. If budget isn't a concern run both, the Marlin system is compatible with 74 portals IIRC

    I'm sure your truck is awesome, but I just can't see how going long travel on a daily rig makes sense. If you really push your vehicle in the desert, you are bound to break something, which means you probably need to trailer it anyways. Sounds like you spent around $26k for long travel. You can buy a decent used SXS for that price and there is no way a LT Tacoma/4Runner is keeping up with a SXS in the desert.

    Your truck does sound awesome though.

    I was wondering about that... Has anyone done this?
    74Weld + Long travel?

    I can't imagine someone dumping that kind of money into a 4Runner.
    But I suppose there's an ass for every seat...

    I should have mentioned that I don't daily the Tacoma. I am fortunate to live 20 minutes from the Rubicon and 50 minutes to open desert so investing in a tow rig doesn't make sense for me right now, it's easier to just hop in and go.

    If you're trying to get into off-roading for cheap you can't beat a sXs, especially if you already own a full-size truck.

    They're @twc_racing on instagram and I'm pretty sure they ran it in the Everyman Challenge at KOH last year. They have a pretty cool FJ race truck too, they're worth checking out.
