Max weight on top of the 5th gen?

It's strapped in place. But, yeah, there's always a risk that anything you carry in the vehicle will become a projectile in a collision. Believe me; I've thought about it. At least when I have the rear seats in, the seat back should help hold it.

OTOH, If it was on the roof, it could go flying and kill someone else.

 

When the vehicle is still, the loads are straight down into mounts and down the structure of the body. It’s extremely strong standing still. Just like when you stand on one foot on a soda can.

When it’s moving (dynamic), the mounts, roof body will be subjected to side to side motions. If you’ve ever had your head move hard side to side on undulating roads or terrain, that distance is a little less than the load on the roof will also have to travel. Some side to side motions are smooth, but the forces due to accelerations may result in multiples of that weight being imparted to the roof mounting area and the hardware. A mount that is strong vertically, may act as a lever and magnify bending forces on the hardware and pass-bolts that go into the roof.

On smooth roads, there are very little additional side loads. But once you get off road, all bets are off. Dynamic loads may not damage the roof all at once, but eventually I can imagine metal fatigue leading to a failure of something.

I worry about that too obviously the answer is yes. But thats a gnarly crash you're not planning to have, in the big picture. I have a heavy full size 33" on steely that I don't want back underneath, or in the back cargo, and it can't fit in roof under garage lol

Yeah, many manufacturers only rate roof racks for the dynamic load. Static loads are often limited to the roof load capacity of the vehicle itself. I've had 200 lbs on my Gobi dynamically and ~900 lbs statically, and zero issues.

To be clear I'm talking about an entire rear bumper with a tire swing and gas pan holder so like a double swing.
+plus welding costs and such cuz many aren't installing themselves. Near $3000CAD all that considered; I've looked

 

I think we might be using different verbiage. I don’t mean full bumper, I mean a hitch mounted swing/tire carrier.

Ya no I don't like those for ground clearance reasons when wheeling. Plus, I think some rattle, some don't, but if I'm gunna carry the tire I just want a tight full bumper that hold the wheel close tight to truck
