I don’t have the most steady hands, and I’m by myself and using flimsy tape measure, can someone confirm that I can go up to a 76” long mattress before being stopped by the back of the center console (with rear seat bottoms taken out, and fillers on the back floor to become even with the folded down seats)? I don’t care if I don’t have a millimeter to spare and I have to push down on it to wedge it into place, just as long as I don’t go too long to where the mattress is under tension and being indented. I think I have it as 76” fitting snugly yet without being under tension. I would like this custom built tri-fold mattress that I’m gonna order to also function as a guest mattress at home, so the longer the better!

Oh and I took this picture from that other website that people talk about, I know for sure that that 66” is dead on, and I THINK that there’s another 10.5” to the console but I’m not positive

    Here ya' go:

It's 64 inches to safely close the hatch and 77 inches if you leave the hatch open.

I'll try and get a measurement on the 5" foam mattress that I have in the back.

The foam mattress that I had cut is 47”x73”x5”. It fits right up to the rear hatch and all the way up to the center console. I have my rear seat bottoms removed. You could go wider that 47”, but then you’ll have to trim around the wheel wells with a hot knife or something.

Thanks! So I wanna say that taking the seat bottoms out could add 10 inches, so that the console becomes your new wall at 74” instead of the rolled up seat bottom as your wall…now you say 64” with seat bottoms in, so I suppose that you actually gain 2” of length then with a higher platform. BamBeds also has mattress sizing based on the seats rolled forward instead of removed but they say that the perfect mattress length is 66”, however it’s raised for 9.2” of under storage, and to also be level with the top of the wheel wells, so that’s interesting that a raised platform will buy you another 2 inches!! I still haven’t been able to check about that 10”/10.5” increase yet because I need to buy a 14mm socket still.

I would also be getting 5” thick. Oh wow, 47”?? Did you remove anything? I had it as 43” between wheel wells. The higher platform that I linked above that’s level with top of wheel wells recommends 54” wide…but their short platform setup/inserts are about 43.5” wide. The way I see it is that I’ll have a lower in-between wheel well setup for solo sleeping (therefore even 42” wide would be fine) but I’ll also have the high platform for two people. Damn I’m glad I started this thread, now I know that the short one means that I need to shave off 2” of length!!

I just measured. If you remove the passengers side seat bottom, you'll gain about 9 inches. The angle of this picture is misleading. But if you remove the seat bottoms AND move the passenger side front seat all the way forward, you'll gain even more room.

That’s great!! I might do a 74” low mattress, and a 76” raised mattress. Worse case scenario I buy a mallet and make it fit lol

I remove the seat bottoms and get an Exped Long X-Wide: 77.6 x 30.3 x 4 inches. No problem.

These lengths are awesome, but I need to be careful. I need to remember that the two setups I have in mind are maximizing width, so I won’t be slipping off to the side of the console on either arrangement. However it is nice to know that if I ever wanna go with a slimmer mattress than I can shift to the side of the console and gain more length! But for what I have in mind here I better rigidly stick to the 9” extension that Borracho measured. So I’ll figure 73” for low platform, and 75” for high. Then maybe get a thinner one at 78” that can totally avoid the console.

    High…

Yep, 47”. The foam has give and contours around the wheel wells with no issues. I just had it custom cut at a foam mattress manufacturer, from their remnant pile.

My strong advice to you, after spending a lot of nights in a 4R, is to not get the tall setup. You will not be able to sit up with that and that is an absolute deal breaker. That particular one looks so tall that with a mattress on it you may need to slither in to it like some hobo snake. Stick with a low platform and a mattress just thin enough to achieve comfort. The Exped someone referenced above is excellent.

Here's a 75"x25"x4" Amazon trifold memory foam mattress with the rear seat bottoms removed. It just touches the rear center console (2013 Trail if that matters). If you want even more room, move the passenger seat up and "carve" around the console with a longer mattress.

The tall platform would most likely be a rarely used 2nd option. Even if running solo, perhaps there would be a situation where the storage space underneath the mattress would work better. But I consider the low platform the go to platform. Damn I’ve seen setup videos that are even taller than that tall platform I have pictured above! Yeah the tall setup would definitely be a sleeping only situation, no hanging back there to read a book or something.

Nice! Are you absolutely sure that the length of that mattress is totally accurate at 75”? I’m asking because I was just scratching around in the back with tape measure, and I arrived at the conclusion that I have to max out at 74” to be safe. I didn’t order the custom mattress yet, but I did reply to them that 74” would be a perfect fit. Maybe I’ll tell them 75” instead. And I don’t want to do and stuffing, or squeezing in. So my width will be 43.5”,

I’ll sometimes come across mattress reviews about how the stated dimensions of the mattress weren’t perfectly accurate to what the person received.

I measured from the end of my mat just ahead of the console (as well as possible...). Here's the photo at the tailgate end:

That’s awesome!! With the lift gate closed it’s not smooshed at all? This is great, I’ll definitely cross off the 74” measurement and at the very least be going with 75”. Thanks. I will be on a 2-3” platform, and a 5” thick mattress BTW

I don't have a dog in your fight as far as height, length, girth, what have you; despite me posting above, posting on your other thread about the $400 prefab pallet thing, and posting now. That said, if you are debating over two inches, just get the shorter one to be on the safe side and be done with it. There is no human being that is going to notice two less inches of mattress length.

I might also add that trying to buy one product to work on both home and vehicle applications isn't a great idea. If you truly plan on using this setup then buy a dedicated vehicle mat as it will be way more efficient.

No dog in the fight either, but would you recommend sitting in the back and measuring distance from the top of your head to the ceiling? Then going for a bed thickness that fits that?

Actually 75” is absolutely perfect to pull double duty!! That’s the standard length of a Twin and Full, without getting the extra long. I’ve been so focused on looking at camping mattresses that I didn’t realize that I landed right on the standard bedding mattress size. I could just toss a Twin or Full back there…then toss it back onto a guest box spring lol

Yeah. I can tell you this: that sit up height is way more important than any other measurement. That's what allows easy in and out, allows you to move around as you sleep, allows you to read, to change clothes, to bang your wife. Visualize your bed at home, and all the things you do on it that don't involve being a human plank. If there was a cover over it that hung down to within 20" of the top of the bed, you'd just relocate every activity to the couch.

Can you sleep in the back coffin style? Yeah. I've done it. You start taking multi-day + trips living out of the truck, and it fucking sucks to not have that space above you.
