To be fair, last summer I had a transfer case failure at 50k miles that likely involved the synchromesh ring. I had yellow metal glitter in my oil.

So, besides making sure that it’s the correct viscosity, I’m personally making sure of two things.

1. Make sure that the gear oil is safe for synchros. Even though the oil I used was supposedly safe for non-ferrous metals, that may have not have been enough.




2. Somewhat related, I’d rather use an oil that doesn’t have friction modifiers meant for limited slip diffs. It’s probably no big deal for the 4runner differentials, but I’m suspect of how friction modifiers affect synchro function in the transfer case. Not sure how much I want risk it again.

 

I just did my Diffs, and xfer case with AMSOIL Severe Gear 75-90. I am NOT rich!

 

Same here. I used Amsoil Severe Gear 75w-90 in my diffs. I have to do the transfer case next.
