Just bought a 4runner. Please help me with wheels!

Hey guys!

I just purchased my first 4runner and I want to replace the existing 20inch wheels. I'm looking at purchasing 17/8.5 but I'm confused with offset. CarID says the 0mm offset will fit but I don't know if this will look right with 265/70/17 AT tires. It's not lifted or anything. Please help a girl out, thanks! Oh I should add it's an SR5.

**CORRECTION**
I went to the shop yesterday and learned it does have a lift. I plan to remove the lift when I get the new wheels and tires mounted. The guy helping me said 0mm offset will sit similar to stock look.

The factory wheels generally have a slight positive offset, which pulls the wheels in tighter to the hub.

A negative offset pushes them outward. Wheels with a negative offset usually cause some rubbing. Many go with a negative offset (usually around 10-12 mm) and trim and adjust things for clearance.

0 offset is pretty safe. I have wheels with a 0 offset.

Interesting that your SR5 came with 20" rims. Something aftermarket that the prior owner put on for looks? An SR5 wouldn't come with 20s from the factory.

Anyway, yes, 265/70/17s would be the stock size for the SR5 and would look good. As Thatbassguy noted, there may be issues if you change the offset too much. There are of course lots of aftermarket 17" wheels to choose from, but for looks and to be on the safe side re quality, you might want to consider Toyota's TRD Off Road rims like in Kmeeg's pic above, or the TRD Pro wheels. You can get those straight from Toyota/your dealer for $215 each, maybe cheaper elsewhere. From what I've seen, aftermarket rims aren't necessarily much cheaper than OEM -- and again, you want to be sure they're well made.

 

It seems to me after reading many threads on wheel/tire installations that people who chose aftermarket non-OEM rims have more rubbing issues.

Maybe it's the wheel offset thing. Anyway I chose OEM rims with 285's and no rubbing issues.

 

This is what I did as well. Not as fancy as getting an aftermarket set, but surprisingly satisfying and actually light on the budget. Then I sold my 20s to someone (I think who found me in this forum) and he was delighted as well.

 

This is true. It's mostly because many of those people choose wheels with negative offset to get the tires to poke out of the wheel-well, which causes it to rub on the mudflaps and fender liner when turning. That's why I chose 0 offset this time around.

A negative offset can become necessary if you go really big with tires and you need to push them away from the upper control arms. Then, you need to trim plastic and possibly the body mount.

 

My wife says I have a negative offset. But she may be talking about something else.

Sort of but not quite. I don't see many Toyotas with the "bro" stance fortunately.

 

I guess that truck doesn't need to remove the wheels to check brakes. I bet the brakes are well exposed with that kind of offset + probably thick spacers.

 

Just my opinion, but when you gotta take a blow torch to the frame of your new car just to make some tires fit, there's something wrong in Denmark.

Yea they are definitely aftermarket. They guy who owned it before me put them on. They are Fuel wheels with Nitto tires. They are nice, just not the kind of idea I have in mind for what I want to do with it.
I originally wanted to go with the OEM TRD bronze wheels but the Toyota parts site said it would not fit..

 

Strange. They should work on almost any -- if not completely any -- 4Runner. Just guessing that the parts site flagged it cause the offset is different (which shouldn't be a problem with regular size tires). What year and exact model is your Runner?

$170 for genuine TRD wheels. Nice. IMHO this makes a lot more sense than going aftermarket unless you have a really specific reason for the specs on the aftermarket rims, or are in absolute love with their look.

 

Ordered my OEM PRO replacement spare wheel from them and they were easy to do business with. They also kept me informed as the order went through the usual steps of being fulfilled.

 

TRD PRO wheels look so damn awesome but sadly not recommend for bigger tires like 285/70R17 by tire manufactures.

Agreed. My reason was to not have the same wheels as 90% of the forum members.

And, 295's + 7 inch wide wheels = no bueno.

 

2014 SR5 I believe stock is 17/7.5 +15 and bolt pattern is the identical.

 

Yea that’s what my friend said too. To not go with TRD so that it is a bit more unique. I was able to find some bronze rims at a decent price and the Overland Expo did a solid review on these. There isn’t too much info out there on them because they are a newer brand so I was a bit skeptical. I didn’t want to spend $250 per wheel however, I also didn’t want to compromise on quality either. They came in yesterday and honestly I think they look pretty cool especially the dark bronze.

 

17/7.0 for the stock SR5 wheels.

 

Looks good! and that's the dark bronze I prefer over lighter bronze other wheel companies normally have.
How much does it weighs?
