I can leave my phone at home, or wherever else I want to, if I don't want it tracking me. Can't quite do that with a vehicle especially if it's your only one.

Plus, I already paid for all of the hardware and software in my vehicle. The company needs to give me a discount or a kickback if they're going to use me as a continuous cash stream without permission.

Do you lock you front door at night? Why bother when the windows are made of glass?

    UPDATE:

So I reached out to Toyota and opted out of everything. The DCM indicator is lit, but there is absolutely no signal.

I'm going to wait a few days and then call back to see if they can reactivate it. If they tell me that I have to go to the dealership, I'll know they don't have remote access.

I still may pull the DCM fuse.

In the words of a little gecko that sells insurance, I don't think that's right.

Also, Akio Toyoda was quite the gentle beast today. He definitely pleased me well with the remote probing system in my 4Runner. I think he's going to ramp up the intensity tomorrow morning, though. That's not good. He's going to wear me out before an important meeting tomorrow morning.

    Good job!

When you say you reached out to Toyota I assume you hit the SOS button in the truck and had them disable the eSIM card? Is there a gray line through the bars of the DCM signal strength indicator?

This would be a good start but have a look at the following articles. Although the Event Data Recorder (EDC) is protected by the Driver's Protection Act of 2015, the infotainment system is not and that thing collects a ton of data. I recommend pulling it and disconnecting the GPS antenna to prevent it tracking your location. All 4Runners come with a GPS antenna up and running under the dash regardless of whether the map option is activated on the infotainment system.

If you wear a tin foil hat while you drive Toyota, the CIA and the UN can't read your thoughts or abduct you for a cavity search.

    Reynolds Wrap works best...

    Never assume.

Actually, I called Toyota and asked to opt out of EVERYTHING. They were very nice about it. I did try hitting the SOS button, but I just heard a loud beep and nothing else. By calling, I was certain that I was opted out of everything.

But I am a bit of a conspiracy theorist, so I will always be concerned about a "back door", even if they require that I go to the dealership for reactivation.

I will post a picture of my touch screen.

Remarks like this are useless. It is not paranoia on our part. It is a very real concern. Hackers have already demonstrated all they can do on the Jeep product.

Additionally, we've had a pipeline shut down by hackers along with a power grid.

You go ahead and rely on a tinfoil hat. With our weaponized government, it won't do much to protect you.

dx, they do make Heavy Duty Foil. Try it, you'll like it...

You drive past businesses that film every vehicle that passes on their frontage road. You carry a locator in your pocket that broadcasts your location even when turned off. Every business, office and building you enter has cameras aimed at you.

So if "BigBrother", the CIA, the UN the Tri-Lateral Commission or the New World Order or Toyota wants to find you it is can easily done, whether you disable benign systems in your chariot or not.

And finally you lose ALL credibility when you talk about a "weaponized government". That's crazy talk...

I'm done w/ this. You paranoids are funny, silly, but funny.

I take personal privacy seriously. I'm not worried about my car getting caught driving by a storefront by their security camera. And I do not have a locator in my pocket (I take it this is a cute reference to my cell phone). This isn't always true.

In my case, my phone doesn't come back to me, but to a business. All subscriptions come back to that business. Even my EZPass stays in an id-shielding bag and only comes out when crossing a bridge. And you guessed it, that car is registered to the business, which means the EZPass is registered to the business.

And I don't lose credibility with my weaponized government. Pull your head out of your ass and see what's going on in our country!

OH NO!!! You're done with this? Whatever will the rest of us do?

@UncleShorty, @Gamma Ray: Yes gentlemen, we get that you think it’s stupid to worry about the DCM. Your mockery has made that clear. You can stop now.

Don't blame me, I voted for Trump.
My DCM fuse has been pulled for probably a year now with no issues.

Somebody mentioned this on here or somewhere else…

Do you have glass windows in your home? Anybody can get inside if they wanted to. Do you lock your front door? Would you be a paranoid person if you locked your door, knowing that somebody could could lean a bit into your window and walk right in?

Doors, locks, passwords, etc. are ultimately just a social cue that signals your personal bubble. That’s it. Thankfully that social cue is backed up by the force of law which ultimately can physically compel others to spend time in jail.

I recognize that law has established that no one has a right to privacy when they are in public.

But it’s reasonable to argue that what is collected by cars, phones, everything rises to a level that is more invasive and dangerous than somebody physically breaking and entering into your home.

It’s just that everyone is already used to it. Just because that weird guy eating stuff from your fridge has been there the last 20 years doesn't mean he should be there.

Actually, he does belong there by squatters rights, unless you exert your claim over the property.

When I called toyota to disconnect, it was basically me saying GTFO.

I sincerely don’t understand why this is so hard to sympathize with by some people.

You guys should give Akio Toyoda's gentle probing a try. He will take you on a trip like you never imagined, all from the seat of your Toyota.

Why do you think the slogan is "I love what you do for me, Toyota!"?

Yes. It's just their first time. They'll learn to love Akio Toyoda's sweet loving.
