Is a used 2023 ORP with 20k miles worth $50k?!

Yes good advice, I’ve been thinking about that for a couple weeks now in regards to what is it worth to me. Buying used is tough for me bc I take meticulous care of my vehicles and a used car always creates unknowns. A low mileage car, single owner makes it easier but as time goes on and I’ve looked at hundreds of cars, a higher mileage car with 1 owner doesn’t seem as worrisome as long as it’s been well maintained. In the beginning I was set on low mileage but the prices feel too high to feel like I’m getting a good value.

IMO the Trailsport is a better choice for your needs.

I can't get over paying more than MSRP for a used 4R. IMO, a 4Runner is just not worth 50 grand. A higher mileage one for 25-30k makes more sense to me.

25-30k gets you a 2k discount . Problem is the starting point for actual depreciation is way too high…above msrp but on a used vehicle. Very good news for current owners but not good if you’re trying to join the club.

If you’re considering the Pilot, what about the Passport? It’s the outgoing design but still solid AWD, a lower than usual 1st gear (20:1) and likely costs a lot less especially since it can still handle light-duty work if you don’t think you’ll need the extra clearance and articulation.

Yeah I thought maybe the redesign on the 2026 passport looked interesting. The 2025 model year seems like a decent choice but just kind of makes me feel like i’m on suburban dad duty (same with the pilot). But let’s get real that’s exactly what I’m doing. Thing is I love cars and I so many of them feel sterile but the 4 runner doesn’t feel that way. The passport or pilot are where I am but the 4 runner is where I want to be…said every middling aged dad lol

    Oooh look, another mod.....
Compromise. It's what we all have to do to survive life. Get the Pilot or Passport for a few years, embrace the shit out of that Dad-Mobile and get a 4Runner later in life. Now when I say embrace the dad life, I mean it. Wear polo shirts tucked into cargo shorts, while wearing a belt. Put your cell phone on your belt clip and wear flip up sun glasses on your regular glasses. If possible, change the horn on your Pilot to the Batman them.

    Duh-nuh-nuh-nuh-nuh-nuh-nuh-nuh, DAD-MAN!

Nothing wrong with buying the thing that actually suits your needs best. And TBH, everyone who sees you in a 4Runner is just going to assume you're on suburban dad duty anyway.

The last vehicle I bought before the 4Runner was a Volvo wagon. As a single 30 year old with no kids. It just checked all the boxes at the time. People made fun of my "wine mom car", but I LOVED that thing. Best vehicle I've ever owned.

The 4Runner checks the boxes now, but if off-roading wasn't one of the boxes, I'd probably have gotten another Volvo. IMO the 4Runner gets a little tedious to drive after a while. The Passport/Pilot is most likely a MUCH nicer ride on a daily basis.

FYI, Honda is about to release the new gen Passport that looks really good, better than the new 4Runner.

Yeah I saw that 2026 passport design it looks pretty cool. Not a true off roader as the clearance is pretty low but definitely edging more in the direction of off road capable.

I bought a 2020 premium trim package last year with 35 thousand miles on it for 36 thousand dollars it has some minor scratches in the clear coat and the windshield has little spots from the previous owner getting too close to a salt truck on the highway but a little rainex on the window and they are all but gone. The 4 runner was a lease, and they had like 6 on the lot all grey premium models and all low mileage so the dealer wanted them gone and was willing to deal. I was willing to take one with minor imperfections and they needed room for new ones.

If suburban dad duty is your current reality, then crazy drunk guy is right! Get a dad-mobile, and embrace it!!!

However, don’t compromise with a Honda cross-over. That’s just a minivan trying to be something else. It makes a poor 4runner competitor while also losing what makes minivans hands-down the most utilitarian vehicles on the face of the earth…which is sliding doors and an interior that can be reconfigured into a huge flat floor.

Women seem to hate minivans because of the mom vibe. So do most guys. But those “in the know” love minivans for what they truly are. The most useful vehicles on the face of the planet. We bought a 2006 Sienna 8-seater brand new, which I finally replaced with the 4runner after 15 years of trouble-free service. Family road trips, commuting, trips to the city dump, hauling dirt, plywood, lumber, rocks, or too many sacks of concrete in the back (i still feel bad about that one). It did it all. Take the middle three seats out…and that thing turned into a covered flatbed. That thing did more work than most suburban pickup trucks will ever do.

4runners are great, are very capable, but they are not as broadly useful. I’d say they are worth their MSRP as a new vehicle, but the value proposition can be poor when buying used for msrp+ prices. Sure, it can be argued resale is nice, but the 4runner’s value comes from it being such a good long term vehicle, so reselling is moot if you own it till the wheels fall off. Resale is also moot if you get hosed on the purchase price.

I think that’s where the market is. I carmax’d my 24 orp yesterday and it was about $4000 more than msrp. Whether you want to pay that is another question. I wouldn’t say it isn’t worth it, but the value proposition of the 4Runner is diminished at these prices. I would check out Lexus gx’s ans lx’s to cross shop for the best features per dollar.

Speaking of vans. The AWD Astro/Safari vans were one of the most versatile vehicles ever made. V6, AWD, decent ground clearance and tons of space inside. It’s a shame no one makes anything similar today.

Just found out CARB "California Air Resources Board" has banned the sale of new RV's (Class A, B, C, gas or diesel) effective 1/1/25
Can I post a YouTube video on this information? Looks like this will impact 6 States?!

Well said! I’m a practical guy but the minivan is a hard pill to swallow. There is some pride in just not giving AF and doing something just because it makes sense though.

We have an old one that we are having a hard time parting ways with. It’s not a solid car that can take a lot of abuse from daily driving (American made), but it’s a highway mileage machine and the kids love traveling in it.

A friend of mine had an old Ford Econoline van with the double side swing out doors. We'd head to the mountains when it was snowing, stop and pack snowballs.
Then drive down the road where people were stopped to play in the snow, swing open the doors and blast away with our stash of snowballs.
    Only got chased once...

If you are truly a practical guy you should be confident enough to not give an F what anyone else thinks.

I commute in a 19 year old Corolla, it's utilitarian and transports one person in great comfort with outstandingly low cost per mile. I pity those who commute in a overlanded out and suspension-kitted out 4Runner with 10-20k in mods who struggle to break 18mpg for their 100 mile a day commutes, doubly so if they are making payments on it.
